by K.K. CheowAfter suggestions that SingaporeÂ’s market may simply be too small to sustain more than one mass transit operator, one broadcaster and one newspaper, the Gahmen is now suggesting that Singapore may be too small for more than one political party.
Said Ministry of Politics spokesman Mr. Wan Too Win, “We must be realistic. Clearly, years of political competition have not worked. Other political parties are just unable to make themselves viable entities. Meanwhile, the dominant party is being obstructed from carrying out its mission as it sees fit. This does no service to Singapore.”
Despite political competition functioning properly in countries with populations of equivalent size, such as New Zealand and Ireland, Mr. Wan said that, “It’s just that the leadership of the rival parties lack the creativity and ingenuity to harness its potential. Why should we support losing ventures? We should just pump all our resources into supporting the one player who manages to make it work.”
Mr. Wan defended the Gahmen’s position, denying that it was a policy u-turn. “It’s not a u-turn! We’re not going back on it. We’re just going around it, so it’s more like a policy bypass.”
Mr. Wan said that consolidating the number of players in the market would also benefit consumers by improving consumer choice
How does having only one player improve consumer choice?
Mr. Wan smiled, “Well, it helps the consumer make an informed choice. We simply inform him or her of the choice they must make. Very clear and convenient. No confusion or frustration.”
