  WhatsApp doesn't understand the web.
  
  Mistake one - it only works on a single browser
  
  Mistake two - it requires the current WhatsApp client for Android, Blackberry or Windows Phone
  
  Mistake three - It doesn't work if your phone is not connected to the internet.
  
  Bonus Mistake - using APIs that are not on the standards track.

  Because your whatsapp details are all on the same server.

  It is easier for the developer to sync them, than to create another bunch of code.

  Also, it relies on your mobile number for authentication, hence the need for your mobile device to be constantly connected.

  Anyone who uses MS Exchange email system will understand the underlying principle.
