You only need a $10 prepaid card that allows you to call and SMS.
You don't need data plans. Watch movies in cinemas and buy DVDs/blu-rays and CDs. Support original.
You don't need games while on the move. Sleep or enjoy sceneries.
You don't need smartphones (smartphones are for stupid people). Smart people only need a basic nokia phone.
You don't need to be online 24/7. It's not cool, it's waste of resources.
Check streetdirectory.com on how to get there before you step out of house. It is pathetic to ask for directions on the streets. Smart people don't need to ask questions, they find out the answer themselves.
It's ok to take up to 24 hrs to reply emails and SMSes.
If you're spending more than $10 each month on phone expenses, you're not doing it correctly. A prepaid card should last you 2-3 mths.
Words of wisdom from someone who have been there, done that. Helping you to save unnecessary money.

Got yea. I happen to have a $10 SingTel Prepaid SIM card and a Nokia 208 (keypad phone)

You only need a basic nokiaphone with prepaid to call, receive calls, send & receive SMS. Now a $10 prepaid card can last me 2-3 months.
You don't need to SMS every few minutes on what you're doing. You can take up to 24 hrs to reply an SMS. You don't need to surf net 24/7 and on the move. Look up streetdirectory website on how to get there before you step out of the house, very useful website, even got bus routes when you click on bus stop.
Don't waste money on data plans, fancy smartphones, apps and games. Don't give in to peer pressure, when you leave the company, you'll lose all your friends. One day, when you're in serious need of money (eg; retrenched suddenly), you will regret all those money spent on data plans and smartphones. It's actually alot of money;
2-yr data plan, $58 each of the 24 mths = total $1,392
plus, $200+ for the smartphone = total $1,592
Oh, I've actually replied to this thread. I thought it's another thread.
Oh never mind...
Whatsapp is quite fast ma, can send pictures, create group etc.
Snail mail is the best.

Last time, only my sister (iPhone) and brother (Motorola) used Whatsapp... Then a few weeks ago, we upgraded on data plans and my dad and brother's phones changed to Sony Xperia phones, with my mother taking my brother's phone which has Whatsapp... Being the only person wtihout Whatsapp left in my family, I am being pushed to install it, but I refuse. Should I or not install Whatsapp?

Don't.
Read my past long messages and understand it.

Personally, I think sms is better... Even though it is about 5 cents for a sms, I know that I am paying for privacy, which Whatsapp does not have. Whatsapp has the 'Last Seen' feature, which can cause people to find out private personal info of the person you are messaging (e.g what time one sleeps or is awake)...

Tell your parents, 24 mths x $___ is alot of money.
$10 prepaid can use for 2-3 months if you're disciplined enough to use it for important/urgent matters. Those "what's up", "how r u doing" chit-chat messages are redundant. Reserve chit-chat for email.

My mum trying to persuade me, but I refuse...
Good because you can connect with your friends at any time. Don't just limit yourself to WhatsApp. There's many other good apps out there.

That's if you use your smartphone a lot... But I do not use my phone to go on the internet and surf. I do not install any apps on my phone, so I'm sorry, but I can't do that.
its good to have whatsapp on phone because it is a must app on your phone :) now a days
