Hello
Hello :) I'm new too haha just hanging around cos need to post 8 posts first before can start a topic zzz
Can I say 'Hi' even though I am not new here? Anyway, hello!
Hello. I apologize if this is not the topic to reply to. The system won't let new users create a new topic, understandably.
I'm an American with an intense curiosity about Singapore. I wanted to ask some general questions of the people here about Singapore.
Is this permitted? If not, I'll shut up and go away. If it is permitted, may I ask some questions, please?
Thank you!

well, as long as there is no intention of offending or provoking anyone, you may ask us anything.
so what do you want to ask us?
Hello!
Hi all, I'm a newbie here.
hi
I assure you, I have no desire to provoke or upset anyone. Quite the opposite. I'm simply curious. I've always found Singapore rather fascinating.
Would it be possible for someone to create a topic for me so I can pose my questions? As a new user it won't let me make a new topic yet and I figured it would be rude to just go around replying to 8 threads at random.
If that's not appropriate, I'll stay in this thread.
I'll fire off my first question:
Singapore may the most remarkable story of development in history. After the British left Singapore the country managed to turn itself into a first world, democratic, technologically sophisticated, and peaceful country.
How did you pull that off? It's stunning.
Thank you.

well, we were fortunate to have good entrepreneurs (eg. Goh Keng Swee) who knew how to drive production and improve conditions and quality using the scarce resources back then in Singapore, and strong leaders (eg. Lee Kuan Yew) who did what was best for the people, not what was favorable to them.
It's about good entrepreneurship and strong leadership.

hi
Thank you for the response. I actually first became aware of Singapore when I listened to an interview with Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. He was a fascinating person and probably one of the smartest people I've ever heard.
If I may pose another question.... I believe Singapore has several different ethnic groups such as Malays, Chinese, and Indians. In many countries this diversity can lead to violence and civil strife.
But that doesn't seem to happen in Singapore. I don't hear about riots, mobs, or killing associated with ethnic tensions.
How has Singapore managed to maintain peace and stability in such a diverse country? What do you think other countries could learn from your example?
Thanks.

Hello! I sort of learnt this in secondary school social studies so I hope I can help you answer your question~ I think the key again lies in good leadership which has crafted really good policies for us that allows for understanding and harmony among the different ethnic groups. For example, there is this quota that limits the ethnic proportion of people living in the same block/neighbourhood in HDBs. Evidently the government realises the importance of common grounds for interactions. Interactions also occur in schools and the army for NSmen. With English as a common language, everyone can communicate despite speaking different mother tongue, and we thus identify ourselves as Singaporeans instead of Chinese Malay Indian etc. and this sense of identity is also enhanced when we say our pledge "pledge ourselves as one united nation regardless of race, language or religion". And we commemmorate Racial Harmony Day every year to celebrate the harmony we relish :)
Thanks for the response.
What is a person's first language? Do they typically learn to speak English first or their mother tongue?
From what I've read Singapore appears to maintain good relations with both East and West. In the future, do you think Singapore will lean more towards China and other Asian countries or more towards the western countries (i.e. US, Europe)?
How do Singaporeans feel about Britain? I've noticed that many former colonial nations have a lot of resentment towards their former colonziers. In my reading I haven't run across a lot of that in Singapore.
Thanks.
