NEA: Charge Singaporeans for the amount of rubbish they throw
Photo of Lee Bee Wah from FacebookThe National Environment Agency (NEA) is considering to charge Singapore residents by the amount of rubbish they throw. The idea was proposed by an Canada-based environmental consultant Golder Associates, who was appointed by the NEA. Speaking at the Energy Innovation forum on Friday (Jun 3), consultant Daniel Ponder said that this idea is similar to paying utilities, and this would “encourage users to recycle”.
PAP MP for Nee Soon GRC Lee Bee Wah supported the idea and claimed that subsidies can be arranged for the low income. However, with the existing subsidies-based social support, cost of living remains unaffordable for the poor in Singapore. Not charging the low income extras does not improve their existing financial conditions but only serve to increase the cost of living burden for everyone else.
Currently, HDB households pay S$7.49 a month for rubbish collection services managed by their Town Council. Town Councils chalked up millions of sinking funds every year after earning a profit from Service and Conservancy Charges levied upon each household. Instead of implementing cost-savings incentives and rebates for Singapore households, the NEA is considering charging more to force people to recycle.

it should be cultivated as a good habit, and not being forced by financial gain or loss. Even for the next generation, it totally defeats the purpose if kids grow up throwing less trash not because they want to save the world but because it's cheaper to do so.

It will also force ppl to throw their rubbish out in other area like void decks etc.

build extra bin for recycling and then charge people for throwing too much rubbish. what about the 83 MPs that open mouth and shoot rubbish? so is the double standard applied here?

Charging $ won't help much . The rich have lots of money to pay. They won't mind pay more to throw more. Can you NEA, LEE BEE WAH and GOLDER ASSOCIATES go get a super intelligent brain to come out with more effective way. The ruling party sure get the right people to help them make more profit.

For this , must get rid of the root problem . . . . Side track a little . They go search house without warrant but no such practice on those lackeys like calvin cheng ...... double standard is acceptable but when opposition do it is a different story.

put it this way, we should be recycling stuff. Yes, no doubt about it. But this just sends a wrong message.
imagine the child asking the parents why are they bringing things down to the recycle bins.
The parents being singaporean will say that it is to save money (and not being enviromental friendly etc).
If they wanted to do something, they should try to change the culture. Most typical Singaporean are extremely driven by numbers, especially money.
What they should do to create a recycling movement, maybe every fortweekly, send a fleet of lorries and maybe an educational bus to various housing district, make it like a mini fair. But instead of punishing those who do not, they should be giving small incentives maybe in the form of ultility bills rebate (strictly no cash vouchers etc). Take this opportunity to educate people properly about saving the environment.

Do NEA and ah wah soh know some rubbish cannot be recycled ? Are they including these that cannot be recycled, reuse to charge us ? Seriously, pure profiteering to charge people on the amount of rubbish.
Recycling can be in different forms. Some can be used for gift wrapping, removing dirt, and so on.

Many in private estate use it to block out parking space, some use it as additional rubbish bin. There are also some ridiculous ones who use it as additional private post box by asking courier to leave their bulky parcel in the bin when they are not home at the time of delivery. They are actually under utilised and some might become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Public in SG should be re-educated on environment awareness and proper social etiquette.
