  Those still studying in VITB/STI, Secondary 3,4 and in Colleges or Pre-U (public or private) or Polytechnics and in Universities, during their school holidays or after school, they work part-time at fast food chain restaurants like at McDonalds, KFCs, Burger King etcs to earn money to support themselves and family too. They were independent and most of them too start full time work before the age of 20 in the various industries in Singapore.

  We could purchase things in Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei using Malaysia Ringgit or Brunei Ringgit or Singapore Dollar because the currencies value were all the same until in the middle of 80s. Singapore stopped using Malaysia Ringgit to buy things in Singapore except Brunei currency. The value of Singapore currency exchange rate increased against Malaysia Ringgit bit by bit from few cents became higher and higher to this day. Singapore today still accepts Brunei currency to be used to purchase goods here because still same value.

  In the late 80s, those having more than 3 children would be penalized. Their 3rd child would have to pay more for healthcare, education etcs.

  Back then no FTs or PRCs only Malaysians with 2 or 3 yrs work permit.electronics sector and metal working sectors were booming. We have lots of factory workers working here.pay was low but standard of living was affordable

  Singaporeans and Malaysians worked side by side in most of the job market in Singapore. Many Singaporeans start work at young age usually after G.C.E 'O' Level or G.C.E. "A' Level and started building their CPF fund.

  Correct it was Yaohan....I also remembered at Plaza Singapura...2nd floor...PONDEROSA SALAD RESTAURANT....buffet style...could eat as much you want for a very reasonable price...they had steaks, sandwiches, burgers and fish n chips too in their menu.

  In late 70s and early 80s, national minimum wage was $250 per month. Overtime rate was 2.5 per hour. And for office workers if the management needed you to work during the weekend (Sunday) they paid you double salary and on holiday was triple salary. If you stayed work after 6 pm you could get your dinner allowance, after 8 or 9 pm bus fare reimbursement and after midnight taxi fare reimbursement. Office work was 40 hrs work week and in some companies even less than 40 hrs work week. More rest and quality time with families, relatives and friends. CPF contribution was 25 per cent for employer and 25 per cent for employee until after recession in middle of 80s....20/20 for employer and employee. National Productivity achievement was good.

  Hmmm? I didn't know Ponderosa has buffet in the past, or maybe just for that branch...

  I do know that certain Breeks outlet used to have buffet though...

  I used to patronized that place with my girlfriend and after that we would go to the small park across the road exactly opposite Plaza Singapura and talk more...there was a small coffee house in that park too...We drank coffee or tea, ate and talk for many hours. Its now somerset mrt station.

  I remember the road at orchard isn't as wide... There are something like steps downwards to the road... ... ... I think...?

  Exactly opposite Plaza Singapura...and if from penang road, it was exactly opposite happy valley restaurant...very expensive chinese restaurant.
