ya thanks for sharing, I heard of thih-pan-bin before, to describe someone 無 strict and fair kind of cold stern look
May I humbly ask u, I have ever come across this expression another " bin" expression as below:
tom-bo- or tong-bo- (tom-bo-bin or tong-bo-bin)
approximate to characters in Hokkien: 蕩tong+無bo(rising tone)+ ???
Used to describe someone's look which is "giving a heck-care face", but I have not been able to figure out the origin and I am puzzled why hardly hearing anyone else use this.
Any idea out there?
动 tong bor bin - fakish, insincere or cheat, a hypocrite.
动 = false moves,

is just a cold stern face nothing to do with justice. may be you watch too much justice pao.

How do you use the commonly heard Hokkien phrase:
åç”·é¢ hau-lam-bin
It is not as commonly heard nowadays as in the past as well.
--- I use it to describe someone with a kind of "fucked-up melancholy face". How about you??
动 was hardly used even by my generation. If you have not brought up it's has not surfaced for me a long time. Last heard was back in the early 70s by an old relative.
åç”·é¢ still can be heard nowadays. Another term commonly used for the same sour face is 祖师爷 chor si yah which has a black face.

I am relieved that many of us still know some obscure expressions that have survived in Singapore. They not necessariily are being spoken in Fujian anymore, and as well does not equate to everything that is spoken in Hokkien of Taiwan.
Many times I hear people around me saying to learn Hokkien is to learn from Taiwanese Hokkien shows. However, it is not 100% same as revitalising Singaporean Hokkien. Because Singapore Hokkien evolved separately from Taiwan Hokkien as well as China Hokkien. It's evolution is more similar to Malaysia Southern Hokkien (boundary from south of Negri Sembilan until Johor, include Malacca)

Sidetracking from the bin topic for "a moment", I remember my grandma used a very special Hokkien expression for "a moment" :
翻身 huan-sin = in a blink of time, immediately, just a moment, shortly
I notice nowadays no-one uses 翻身 huan-sin anymore.
Some Hokkiens (not me) uses another obscure Hokkien expression for "a moment" :
臨邊 liam-mi = in a blink of time, immediately, just a moment, shortly
As with 翻身 huan-sin, I guess no-one elses uses 臨邊 liam-mi to mean "shortly" in the present time.

翻身 huan-sin and 臨邊 liam-mi indeed are the "older" types to express "a moment's time".
If I am not wrong, there is even a more traditional way of saying "in a blink of time, immediately, just a moment, shortly", just 1 word only :
隨 sui = in a blink of time, immediately, just a moment, shortly
Eg: 去先,我隨來。 Li Kh'i Seng, Wa Sui Lai. (You shall go first, I will come shortly.)
As with 翻身 huan-sin and 臨邊 liam-mi , 隨 sui is hardly heard nowadays.
* * * * *
Now, as you mentioned, this expression is used more often:
「jit bang nia = in a blink of time, immediately, just a moment, shortly
This expression has a sound change very similar to it's sibling word which we had discussed before here :

Route
- 這目 Tsit Bak ► Tsip Bak ► Tsip Mak ► Tsim Mak (when spoken at normal pace) ► Tsi Ma (when spoken fast)
- 這目 means "at the blink of the eye" ► "this moment" ► "now"
「jit bang niaor 「jit ban niais a merger of sound from 4 words :
1. 蜀 (or commonly written as 「一) = Tsit = "One"
2. ç›® = Bak = "Eye"
3. (目) = Nih = "Blink"
4. ä»” = A = "Diminuitive Ending"
蜀目(目)仔 = Tsit Bak Nih A ► Tsit Bak Nia ► Tsit Ban Nia ► Tsit Bang Nia
