Given the fact that the name Tekka had originated from Hokkien and were commonly used than Zhujiao, I cannot think of what was the rational to change to Zhujiao other than the government agenda to Mandarinize everything?
It has already happened to China Guangdong province and Fujian province, and given Singapore's track record of wanting to destroy the Hokkien culture, if all the place names were Mandarinized to cater to all these new Chinese Northerner Immigrants, I wouldn't be surprised.

If earlier on had we recognise that all our dialects are in-fact full fledged languages that are able to function in all spheres of the society, Hokkien would not have been dismissed as a sub standard dialect having no written form and literature.
Based on mutual intelligibility, Hokkien speakers and Mandarin speakers are not mutually intelligible. Therefore Hokkien is rightfully a "language".

I like your quote very much.
We the people of Singapore was not aware the "chun" that we were in already was "puah", and sailed till it sank so it was too late to "kio" any "chun teng" at all already.
Even I find it very bizarre that the Peranakans who had a distinct separate culture and language from the Chinese, did not put up even a slight resistance when they were forcibly categorized into the Chinese ethnic group and so withered the Peranakan language and now they willingly accept the foreign language called Chinese as their "second language"?

dun think there is anyway anyone or any group can bring back the vigour of dialects, the govt still so persistent, even the last one will eventual fall.
there is someone who want to speak hokkien may be you can join him. Dunno he want Sg hokkien or taiwan hokkien?

Taiwan Hokkien as so far there are still many usage preserved from China, vocabulary wise quite authentic enough (apart from those new influences from Mandarin Kuo-Yü) which I may be keen to learn from the Taiwanese.
As for Singaporean Hokkien, I feel the cultural mix with Teochew & Malay (via Baba) has resulted in a special variety which deserves to be preserved as well.
However having been in touch with Singaporean Hokkien for such long time, I am used to our Amoy / Tang-UaN / Lam-UaN type of accent. I am even okay with the Penang / Medan-type of Chiang-Chiu accent. But I still have difficulty accepting the Taiwanese accent (based on 70:30 Chiangchew:Amoy) that reverses some important vowel differences that our Singaporean Hokkien has.
I am usually rather reserved about getting involved into this kind of activities as I don't know whether would it turn out to be awkward with people whom I am not familiar with.

China's policy of teaching the "national language" has gone till the extent of destroying the mother tongue of different segments of people.
What the government propagates is that "teaching of the national language (i.e. Putonghua) is not to exterminate the regional languages, but to promote social mobility through intralingual communication".
What the teachers do in the schools are often as below:
- â—� Students are not allowed to communicate in the regional languages in the class, out of the class, during CCA period as well

Okinawa people get to use their Okinawa names in their original forms and not forced to use the mainstream Japanized forms.
