SINGAPORE: Pay television operator SingTel said the authorities' latest move to enforce cross-carriage rules may lead to a situation where no operator will want to secure sought-after content in future.
On Wednesday, the Media Development Authority asked SingTel to share the next three seasons of Barclays Premier League matches with rival StarHub.
SingTel said there's now no incentive for first movers to secure, for example, future deals for World Cup soccer or European Football Championships.
It's a point that telecoms analyst Ajay Sunder agrees on.
He said: "If in the long run SingTel or StarHub, if they both know that they will have to share whatever the exclusive content - earlier used to be exclusive content, then there might be a situation in future where none of them actually want to pay a bit higher and they don't want and they might lose out on - users (subscribers) might lose out on all the content possible."
SingTel said it played by the rules when securing Premier League rights, which is why it will be appealing the cross-carriage decision.
SingTel has also said that football fans will end up either not getting future content, or having to pay more for it.

having to pay more in the future?
didnt we end up paying much more because singtel outbidded starhub???
The Media Development Authority is closely monitoring ongoing negotiations involving the rights to screen English Premier League matches here, said Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim in Parliament on Wednesday.
He said the authority was wanted to make sure there were no loopholes in the cross-carriage measures that have been put in place.
He was responding to Chua Chu Kang GRC MP Zaqy Mohamad's question as to why no other content providers, other than SingTel, has been able to offer the broadcast of the English Premier League this coming August.
In October last year, SingTel's mio TV announced that it had signed on the non-exclusive broadcast rights for the next three seasons of the league, even before the bid was opened up to Asian broadcasters.
While SingTel's deal might have been "non-exclusive", it will be the sole broadcaster here with access to the matches if StarHub does not do a deal with the premier league.
Under cross carriage rules, the non-exclusive nature of the new agreement opens the door for rival telco StarHub to also put in a bid.
Dr Yaacob said: "We're looking at this very very closely to see whether there are any built-in barriers which will bypass the regulator."
He added that "at the moment all we know is that SingTel has signed but we know that other providers are interested and they are in negotiations".

If lucky, sometimes you might see a streaker or animal running across the field.
But only if you are lucky.
