SingTel customers complain of wrong additional charges in telephone bills

SINGAPORE: Some customers of telco SingTel have complained of wrong additional charges in their telephone bills.
One SingTel customer said her husband received more than 10 charges for a premium rate service she did not subscribe to.
Premium rate services are available to all mobile users, and include services like games and quizzes.
Each charge was S$4 to S$8. The total charges came up to S$64.
The charges are from a third-party company TMG Asia Pte Ltd.
A police report has also been filed and the third party company is uncontactable.
"We
just told SingTel that we received these web messages from a company.
And they immediately told us they would give us a 50 per cent discount.
How can there be an additional service that we do not know of? If we
don't opt out of it, will such things happen again?" the customer said.
In response to a query from Channel NewsAsia, SingTel said it received feedback from some customers about such charges.
It
said it bills on behalf of the content provider, and assists customers
if there are disputes over charges by highlighting their case with the
respective content provider and tracking the progress on their behalf.
A
SingTel spokesperson also said under the IDA's guidelines, content
providers like TMG Asia Pte Ltd are required to state clearly upfront
the charges for each and every transaction.
Customers have the option of opting-in or opting-out of the charges.
SingTel has advised its customers to ignore and delete SMS text messages from unfamiliar numbers, if in doubt.
It
added it has provided customers with the option of blocking such
premium rate services from their phones since February last year. But a
one-time charge of S$10 applies.
Consumer watchdog CASE said it has seen 98 of such cases involving third-party charges in 2012.

What authority is TMG Asia Pte Ltd given to charge?
yeah yeah i will look at my bill thoroughly every mth
i dont see y users need to pay to block these msgs.
every time i renew contract and they throw in all those "free services" for a limited promo period, i always tell them to cancel on the spot.
but they say cannot cancel from their side. must call cust svc to cancel.
one day i called CS and say want to cancel. the person say cannot cancel. must wait until the free period finish.
(wat if i 4got and they just happily start charging me for something i din want in the 1st place???)
another day i called again and say i want to cancel, ok m'am, we will cancel for u. it will take one working day
so inconsistent loh
but as long as cancel can liao lah
or i will call everyday till they do it
and better not charge me a cent more

That's not my experience with 4G. It is what I read. 4G is still very new in the market.
Anyway not all providers of 3G or 4G provide efficiency. Like in the case of Taiwan, they complain their 3G is not reliable.
all go korea!!

If I turn on data roaming, won't they charge me a lot of money through the overseas telecom company?
I read horror stories of people racking up thousands of dollars of bill when they go overseas and use their phones to surf net.
Damn scary.

Of course they would. So far, singtel standard rates is 22 dollars per mb. Smartphones have the option to disable overseas data roaming, found in the network settings.
So far I have used the data roaming in japan, thailand, and vietnam, but on singtel's packaged day/s rates, and I love it. If you researched, its actually cheaper than to get a local sim card. I get unlimited data for the number of days paid for. Cheapest I got was $15 per day to $100 for 5 days.
Most important thing to note is that the rate is only applicable to singtel affiliated network, so must use manual network selection to lock that network, otherwise a whole new set of charges apply, than yes you see hell on your bill.
