At least 40 workers are believed to be injured when a jackup rig at Jurong Shipyard tilted to one side on Monday.
Two workers are believed to be missing, according to Shin Min Daily News.
About 2,ooo workers who were working on the rig at the time of the accident, said the report. Some workers said they heard loud explosions and some cables snapped, causing the rig to tilt to one side.
According to Shin Min, some tried to escape by jumping off the rig into the sea.
About 90 workers were injured when a jackup rig at Jurong Shipyard tilted to one side on Monday.
Among them, 22 were seriously injured and one is still in a critical condition. The rest suffered minor injuries.
The accident happened at Jurong Shipyard Pte Ltd worksite at Tanjong Kling Road.
Preliminary findings showed that the three-legged jackup rig tilted to one side after the jack-up mechanism of one of the legs failed to work, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).
I just heard about the news.
Just contacted my boss to see if any of my colleagues were involved.
I was on board another customer's rig at jurong shipyard about 3 weeks back.
wa knn, this is really jialat.
equipment failure.
Just reinforces how dangerous ship yards are.
Some of my colleagues were on board but none were hurt.
Those 2 bollocks who put blame on foreigners abt this incident are another 2 ignorant people that I've seen today. They must be working deskbound in airconditioned office and just put blame on anything they can put the blame on without having knowledge. Didn't they know shipyards, oil-&-gas industry practise & enforce high level safety and quality? This rig might be installed in the deep sea to extract oil for goodness sake.. Foreigners have nothing to do with safety here duhh!
some ppl constipate oso blame foreigners/govt de

I stopped short of commenting on their replies, because I rather they remain ignorant and oblivious to that fact.
The Jurong shipyard accident which left 89 workers injured is "one of the worst accidents" in Singapore, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Manpower Hawazi Daipi.
The Manpower Ministry, which has halted work at the rig, will conduct a thorough investigation. The incident is a reminder to employers that safety is of utmost importance, said Mr Hawazi who visited injured workers at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH).
Some 89 workers were injured when a jackup rig at Jurong Shipyard tilted to one side on Monday. They were sent to hospitals; 77 has since been discharged.
Six remain in normal wards while another six are under observation.
That rig was due for delivery in the 2nd quarter of 2013. Seems the only way to get it out of that jam, is to borrow the 2 heavyweights from keppel.

we should probably wait for the investigations to be out.
Manpower Minister Tan Chuan Jin on Tuesday, praised the evacuation efforts at the Jurong Shipyard where an industrial accident a day before had sent more than 1,000 workers scurrying out of an oil rig for safety.
Mr Tan said he was encouraged that all the workers on the rig had been evacuated within 20 minutes.
He made the remarks during a visit to the shipyard on Tuesday, where he received a briefing about what had happened on Monday.
The Straits Times understands that the rig has since been stablised although it is not known when attempts will be made to raise up the parts of it that has been submerged.
I wish fireice died there lol. Kiding.

From what I read, the rig is not handover yet and still at berth. So should not be in deep sea at the moment (afterall within SG sea, there no oil to extract). Since it is not handover yet, it should be still around pre-commissioning or commissioning phase as it is one month before handover. Anyway, this look more like an engineering issue that cause this failure (can be due to human during design/installation/commissioning etc).
what if design and engineering no issue? what if its a poor weld or imappropriate equipment installation? workers dont know how to interpret or never do as per instructed?, AND even shit the inspectors failed to catch the problem or skipped some aras of checking?
A failed braking system had caused the oil rig at Jurong Shipyard to lurched to one side on Monday, said Sembcorp Marine chief executive Wong Weng Sun.
Providing an update on the incident to the media on Tuesday, Mr Wong said initial investigations showed the braking system on one of the movable legs of the rig had failed, causing the platform to slide down the leg on that side.
Load tests run on the rig just a day before the accident had shown the three legs of the rig could bear a load of some 9000 tonnes each, said Mr Wong.
The company is now trying to stabilize the rig so that it can investigate the cause of the brake failure.
maybe even want cheap until materials of spares and supplies all get from cheap cheap country one.
