So it may be an opportune time for the Government to study the viability of enlisting fresh N-level school leavers or those with higher qualifications to serve national service as nurses. The others could serve as nursing assistants. They could be deployed in our public or community hospitals, nursing homes and polyclinics after their training. Besides alleviating the nurse shortage, there are other benefits: We will become less dependent on foreigners to meet the increasing demand for nurses to look after our ageing population. We could steadily build up a pool of "operationally ready" local nurses who can be activated in a national emergency or health crisis. At other times, they could render medical first aid at home and within the community. Our elderly patients will face fewer language barriers when communicating with local nurses serving national service. These nurses will have the knowledge and capability to better look after their infirm parents or in-laws at home in the future, and thus lessen the families' financial burden substantially. Those with N or O levels may willingly choose to pursue a nursing career as a result, because it may offer them better prospects than other jobs. With early exposure to health care, some of these nurses may decide to become full-time nurses after their stints. In short, enlisting teenage Singaporean girls to serve national service as nurses will benefit not only our country, but also the enlistees and their families.

actually i kinda like this as my NS. For NS, I am only willing to serve as nurse. Not as some soldier.

You know summer hill, being young as you are...i really admire your commitment to serve NS. You are the first young lady I met to really want to serve NS as a Nurse...The others I don't know how they feel about this. I know most Singaporean women don't want to do the nursing job because it is dirty...you know what I mean by being dirty right...you have to clean up the patient if he or she...you know poo poo or pee pee.. -

you share your knowledge and experience with the younger generation in future to come summer hill...it seems you may ended up to become a Doctor when you go into medicine..good choice to help the people who really need your help in the future..you will see my word will come true here.. -

Well, one thing I can see too here eventhough the Worker Party wins the election in the future, there will be some policy changes and they will also move in the same direction like the present government. To make Singapore a better city to live in and a business hub in this region. They have no choice too but try to make Singapore more prosperous because we are an Island with no mineral resources.

Very premature to talk how or what WP will do if they take over. There are more than one way to manage. Bottom line is whether these political parties are commited and love the country enough to rule and create policies basing on people first as the basis.

We all know that the main purpose is to defend singapore, not for making nurses, cooks, shoepolishers or whatever else summerhill might want to do. Females as conscripts would be a massive waste of tax dollars, time, effort and space. There are a few females who serve NS on their own, but that is fine, just a couple of them. The whole population of women serving NS? That would be a total nightmare.
