Does Singapore have a culture that respects the work of low-wage foreign workers?
This issue came up time and again during a public forum on the minimum wage for low wage workers held on Saturday afternoon at the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre in Clarke Quay.
Organised by Transitioning.org, an organisation that helps support the unemployed, the panel of speakers included Singapore Democratic Party treasurer, Dr. Vincent Wijeysingha, Leong Sze Hian, ex-President of the Society of Financial Service Professionals and Kumaran Pillai, Chief Editor of The Online Citizen.
Wijeysingha told the audience of 40 guests that he was concerned Singapore had developed a culture of exploiting its foreign workers such as construction workers, hawker centre and toilet cleaners.
“The fundamental engine of our growth, essentially speaking, is exploiting our workers more and more and more as it is. Wages need to be kept low in order for profits to be kept high," he said.
Another panel speaker, Jolovan Wham, Executive Director of the Humanitarian Organisation for Migrant Economics (HOME), agreed and said migrant workers are easy to take advantage of.
“When we don’t have a culture that respects workers’ rights in general, and the issue of low wages is an important component of this culture, then all low wage workers will suffer," he said.
"The reason local workers are displaced is because migrant workers are easy to exploit so the solution is not to target these foreigners. This is a huge concern for me,” added Wham
Leong said among those being exploited are students from neighbouring universities who came to Singapore to serve their internship.By writing what I posted below does not mean I am ignoring the reality that there are some foreign low wage workers facing the problems of exploitation and bully. What I wanna say is that take care of our very own local low wage workers first, give them the priority then solve the probs of the low wage foreign workers.
Hey, the foreign low wage workers are not the only ones who are bullied and exploited la. Our very own local low wage workers are also in the same shoes. So why only talk about the problem of the foreigners>>>>>????? To be fair, some foreign workers working in other countries are also bullied and exploited.
There are cases whereby our very own local low wage cleaners are made to work very long hours with no medical benefits. They are exploited to take over the other workers who have resigned without being paid a salary for their added responsibility. Another case is that our local cleaner's pay is cut each time the company employs foreigners. This poor chap is getting as low as $300 per month. So is there any opposition or MIW who are concerned for our very own local cleaners being exploited and bullied. Or has Singapore opposition as well as the ruling party starting a culture that only care for the welfare for the foreign low wage workers.
Well, it is also overstated that foreign workers only work on jobs that people in Singapore are not doing, this is very bloody lame. Our very own local cleaners doing the same job as the foreigners are lower paid than them. So ???? ARe you people both the oppositions and PAP govt practising double standard to only show concern for the foreigners.
If this is the way of the oppositions, sad to say no oppositions in Sinkingpore is worthy to be voted in.
? ?
Singapore style is like that...
this is an oppressive society
to get rich, they have to resort to this
or else how do u think they achieve their GDP..
The man is doing, but heaven is watching
so that he can live long enough, to see another GRC down next election.
Take care of foreign workers and you take care of Singaporeans - Dr Vincent Wijeysingha's message.
