Shoebox size apartments should the government intervene?

More developers are building shoebox size apartments and these apartments sell well even though they can be as small as 400 sq feet for a one or two bedroom unit. Now instead of limiting it in the Central locale, developers are also building shoebox units in the suburbs. Will shoebox units make Singaporean become psychological neurotics? Will it discourage singles from starting a family? On the other hand it does allow those with limited budget to enter the housing market and buy as a hedge against seemingly continually rising prices! what do you think? should the government intervene? If the government does not intervene, will the developers all collude and just simply build more shoe box size units and this might give very little option to Singaporeans buying private properties? And developers could collude if they think they can make more money in selling the idea that we should all leave in shoe boxes! e.g 400 sq feet for 2 bedroom shoe boxes 600 sq feet for 3 bedroom shoe box and 800 sq feet for 4 bedroom shoe boxes? Will this sort of no option collusion happen?

Control? I think living in a small space like a 300 sq feet apartment for a family of 3 is ridiculous! Thefamily might all turn psychotic and start behaving weirdly....Surely the government don't want a lot of mad families around, does it? However where developers are concern, their Greed knows no bounds . If they can sell you coffin like space for every room and have 4 bedroom apartments the size of 4 or 5 coffins-at 2,000 dollars per square foot coffin space - they will! And that is why the government must intervene- unless they also think staying in coffin like space is good for our sanity! -
Maybe next time can upgrade by adding a small room to the existing shoebox apartment.

Shoebox size apartments should be for the foreign expats who are bachelors who are only seeking to work in singapore for few years.
It is inhuman to life in such a small confinement.
I have lived in a one room apartment in Australia for 6 months - it is boring. When I cook - the whole room smells because I like to fry my vegetables. So little space that I had to hang my tv on the ceiling - give me a neck ache whenever I watch TV.

Agreed and tha tis why it is important to limit the nmber of shoe box type apartments. How small should be the smallest bedroom in any flat in Singapore? 8ft by 6 feet? 48 sq feet for a room alright? Developers are all for smaller space if they can make more money . They will even sell you the idea that it's healthy to sleep "vertically" if they can make more money! -
You must notice the technic of labeling used here. The same modus operandi as in politics and religion.
If small apartments are to be promoted, it is called as studio apartment, to condemn it, call it shoebox apartment.
Same with the other famous lable, Foreign Talent, to make it easier to bring in the lot.
Those who want a social security net, Needy, to embarress those who need it.

Studio apartments are basically small apartments meant for one . Studio apartments are by definition not meant for families. Yet one can have a big luxurious studio of 800 to 1000 sf in a prime district or a small studioo f 350 square feet but meant for ONE person or at most a couple! BUT shoe box apartments can be 1, 2 oe 3 or even 4 bedroom shoeboxes. Imagine a family of 5 or 6 living in a 700 square feet 3 bedroom shoebox. -
Lets say a small strata space, without walls, what could it be? A studio apartment or a shoebox apartment.
It would depend, wouldn't it.

Shoebox apartments could be a studio or one bedroom apartment or two bedroom apartment or three bedroom apartment all between 300sq feet to say 600 or 700 sq feet. But a studio usually means it has no seperate single one bedroom and generally meant for a single or a couple. -
So the common factor is the size. How the size is configured and who and how many people occupies it is moot.

But if a family with the money wants to cramp up in a shoe box apartment, that their perogative. They know they can get a five room government flat with that money.
My point is label it, and then attack.

There are certain coditions to be met to get HDB flat e.g salary cannot exceed a certain amount etc. So not necessarily so that every family can easily get HDB flat unless it is a resale flat. I don't think one wants to attack for the sake of attacking. Fact is most people find shoe box aprtments too crammed-of course there will always for some who love it! BUT where developers are concern- making money is paramount! Whether what they built is crammed or not doesn't bother them too much if they can churn the demand .
