THE editorial ('Cleaning sector should not be a dark spot'; last Friday) has not come a day too soon. As a frequent visitor, I am prompted to ask if Singapore has taken a holiday from the cleanliness drive that was once second nature.
I wouldn't say Singapore is less green now, but it is undeniably much less clean. So much so that a friend, a Dubai resident who visited Singapore, told me that when it comes to public hygiene now, Singapore cannot hold a candle to Dubai. He cited an example of how he almost threw up when he used a public restroom. That has also been my recent experience.
Let us not place the onus of making the city clean only on the cleaners and contractors. Doubtless, they do a perfunctory job these days, but how about the residents and visitors? Their contributions to the filthy state of affairs are enormous.
People in general, excluding the Japanese and their ilk, are not given to cleanliness. The sense of hygiene has to be imposed and enforced.
Singapore was once famed for being a 'fine' city - in two senses of the word 'fine'. But now I find pavements plastered with dog poo, and parks strewn with cigarette butts, drink cans and plastic bags with leftover food.
If Singapore wants its lost reputation as a clean city back, it must deal with the inconsiderate members of the public, and lethargic contractors and cleaners.

There is too many people in Sg. Overcrowding.
population overload. More people more rubbish created.
Population overload is creating more and more problems for citizens.

have people out there fine the litterbugs
one piece 50 cents
One thing abt the neighbourhood area...
not sure if u notice those regular block cleaning in ur area... now the frequency is getting less and less... and cleaners do not sweep everyfloor of the HDB like they used to, only the first floor now...
I personally feel that our neighbourhood maintanence standard has dropped down alot... no idea wat's the reason though... lazy contractor or job scope got smaller (thus cheaper)
Oh ya... Recently on my way to work, I saw a bangala, no idea foreign or local, behaving rather suspicously... then I saw him trying to put an empty plastic bottle into a bush in a rather slow motion...
Was wondering what the f**k is he trying to do... then he notice that I'm looking then he take back the plastic bottle and walk away...
DEY~ the nearest rubbish bin is only like 2 metres or maybe 10 steps away from him !!!

may be he used to litter in the bush back home.
To my memory, Singapore has never been clean enough to live up to that tag. Hawker centre toilets have always been that filthy, and there have always been irresponsible gits with shit for brains who let their dogs poo anywhere and don't clean up after their meals.
we used to be cleaner
So much foreign trash all around.
How to be clean?

All in this island should put in effort to maintain cleanliness. However, the govt to play the role of helping in maintaining the cleanliness. Just look around they are not doing much.
What is cleanliness to the Pigs, I mean PAPigs, cleanliness is not money that can go into their pockets??!!! So why should they care for something not generating revenue to them.

no wonder gui gui like you; same trade.
here we've never been clean
cos social responsibility is hardly seen as what KB mentioned
The clean comes from the work of the foreign workers instead.
Sg is the best.
