I couldn't believe my eyes initially either. Very odd, consering that they made the jump in the timespan of only one generation. Kudos to them for that.
Plus, Croatia, Chile and Argentina are first world countries too, since 2011.
In the next 5 years, we'll probably see Uruguay, Romania, Cuba and Mexico become first world as well. All of Southeast Asia excluding Laos, Vietnam and Burma will MOST LIKELY become first world by the end of the 21st century ( if everything goes smoothly ). Times are changing.

Nope. I plan to visit them in the near future, starting with SG.

Things usually are very different from what you read unless you been in any country for awhile.

I know, I know.... it's a common misconception in third world countries that first world countries are always better... you know, America/ Europe/ Japan is always better than all other countries. The reality is not as it seems. No matter who you are and where you live, you can bet that you'll have imperfections and imbalance in your society. No country is perfect. Every country has its ups and downs.
Anyway, I believe that seeing is believing. I guess I might have some false perception towards certain countries. Still, the internet is the world's biggest virtual library. And of course, like you mentioned earlier, everyone knows their own backyard best.
Things which make Sg interesting?
1) Orchard Road
seems never changing over the short term but evolving landscape over the long term.
bustling with life, interesting people.
2) Our Coffee Shop/ hawker centre
unique Singaporean with racial mix.
Indian, Chinese, Malay food under one roof.
3) Holland Village
Hippy, cool hangout.
people used to dine in slippers and T but with hordes of angmohs in power suits, locals can't do that anymore.
4) East Coast Rd/ Joo Chiat Road
still can see many quaint, well preserved prewar shop houses that are not totally, cosmetically made-over like Chinatown.
Happening, cool, luxurious.
Multi-ethnic food setting from Indian, pizza, Khmer, Japanese, Korean, Thai etc
angmoh style family oriented settings. Shocking to seeing so many angmoh family outings here.
5) West Coast (Junction of Pasir Panjang Road)
Smaller scale of Singapore River.
Good hideout.
very small but never short of naughty pubs and bars.

I wasn't aware of numbers 3, 4 and 5. The first two are quite well- known I guess. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on things which make Singapore interesting.
