Singaporeans are too lazy. Don't blame it on the forginers.
Singapore has not been clean for very long already . The worse is now. So many things are negative since the good for nothing lee hsien loong took over as PM.
Both Singaporeans and foreigners litter, no doubt about it. Sweeping statement to say Singaporeans are lazy like as if there are no lazy foreigners. If don't like Singaporeans just get lost.
I think that guy went to the poor sector.

Why on earth in Singapore is the poor sector?
Overall, the whole country is not as clean as before. Both foreigners and locals contribute rubbish. I usually look for rubbish bin to throw my things, if there isn't any I will just place it in my bag then throw it when I see rubbish bins.
I don't think it would be fair to say that Singaporeans litter. Maybe some do, but those who care and are educated will never litter in their own backyard. Personally, I think it's the immigration/ tourist problem too.

Education has nothing to do with littering. Saw educated people litter.

Uhh, no no no, small misunderstanding, sorry. I meant education as in moral education, not the education we get at college and stuff. I agree that sometimes educated (rich) people litter as well. Even my own parents think it is OK to litter, since we are 'creating jobs' for people.... I am totally against littering btw.
Less people less litter, vice versa.

Where on earth in Singapore is the poor sector?
"However, the amount of rubbish littering housing blocks and common areas makes such claims dishonest."

How to get people to be civic minded?

Good question. Honestly, it's a society kind of thing. You know the saying, monkey see, monkey do. Likewise, people get the impression that if others litter, they can as well, which is obviously wrong. This false justification must be removed to create a more conducive environment for moral eduaction. That's where the concept of a shame society comes in. Unfortunately, this is only practiced in 2 countries, Japan and South Korea. So, we can see the connection now. Well, everything is easier said than done... I doubt such a society will remain sutainable in this globalised world.

Yup, i totally agree with you. The root of the problem lies in the culture we're raised up in. Honestly I feel super disturbed when I see people spitting wherver and whenever. Anti-littering has to be taught from young and parents play a very important role. Like in school, my principal actually picks up litter himself (instead of asking us to do it). This actually makes propels us to follow him and make the environment cleaner and more conducive. ;)

education as in moral and social education. both parents and school must play a part.
but then i dont see any chance of reversing the situation coz both parents and govt think alike. chasing paper at school, chasing money at work!! thats all they care about.
moral and social responsibility? who cares?
Times are bad.

Thanks. Glad to see there are others who realize the problem for what it actually is. Nowadays, it's about pointing fingers, about finding that scapegoat, that someone to blame. We tend to blame our governments for everything. No one man or force is to be held responsible for a problem, it's always a string of men or forces. That ''string'' includes us as well, more than often.
Why must rely on cleaners? As long as we have the habit of not littering and taking the initiative to clean up after we eat, everything is ok. Its only temporary anyway until the lunar new year is over and the cleaners come back.
Look at the Japs, at the last WC in South Africa, they bothered to take out their thrash after the watching the match and throwing them into the dustbin and not dumping them all over the stadium premises.

That's what I meant. Our society allows for such things. Eat at the restaurant, don't even place the rubbish together, let alone throw it away... everything is scattered, but it's OK. Then at school, children throw rubbish everywhere, but are reluctant to clean up afterwards. But it's OK. This is why we will never progress in moral education. We should follow the Jap and Korean moral ethics. They're the only ones who got it right so far.
We need to be clean and green.

Easier said than done my friend.
At first the word was clean and green.
Then change to garden city.
Now quiet.
Everyone knows it's the brigade of sweepers that keep Singapore clean.

Take up a broom and start sweeping.
It's that easy.
