SINGAPORE is changing. Our society is becoming more compassionate towards animals.
Laws protect domesticated animals from abuse and wild animals from being trafficked. People rescue abandoned animals, such as cats, from shelters and provide them with loving homes.
People question the serving of shark's fin soup on special occasions, such as wedding dinners. Zoo animals are no longer forced to give unnatural performances. Restaurants offer more vegetarian options on their menus.
Indeed, in increasing numbers, people recognise that animals are thinking, feeling beings deserving of respect. This shift towards greater compassion by Singapore's Government, people and businesses makes it all the more disturbing to see the Healthy Dining series, on Wednesdays on MediaCorp's Channel 8. The series is shot in China, with the goal of teaching the audience about healthy ingredients and how to prepare them.
However, some of these ingredients are animals, such as snakes and guinea pigs. For example, in the show about snakes, the hosts visit a snake farm and play with a snake. Not long after, we see stir-fried snake served on a plate, snake in a soup and a skinned snake. In this way, the show promotes the consumption of exotic animal parts for their alleged 'healing properties' and may whet appetites for exotic game meat among viewers.
In Healthy Dining, the animals are viewed only as objects of entertainment and nutrition for humans. Where, please, is the shift towards greater compassion for animals that we are seeing elsewhere in Singapore society?

ie. cannot eat snakes.
How many people have died of snake bite in Singapore?
Yet whenever we see a snake, the first action is to kill it immediately. Even if it is a harmless tree or grass snake.
If we can show compassion to a specie of living creature, it show we have it in us, to be compassionate to other human beings too.
Those who can't stand another specie of life, are the kind of person who are just tollerating another other human who are not of the same flock as them.
We can justify eating sharkfins if Hollywood potrays sharks as maneaters, so are the deadly snakes, most people don't understand which species are venomous or not.
Better they do films on aliens and ghosts, we don't eat them.
Many ppl eat snake in sgf.
2012, Year of the snake with legs.

The first paragraph sounds like "ignorance is bliss". I rather think that we should be educated with the knowledge of species of venomous and non-venomous snakes. Rather than using ignorance as a way of justifying that we can eat them. Agree?
is compassion extended to roaches and rats and mosquitoe flies as well?

It is how the potrayal of animals by humans through their opinions that which species are deems good and bad. As long as they are part of this planet, all living creatures including plants are just as one of us.

So what is so bad about mosquitoes, flies or roaches? It's just because they are harmful or irritating to the human species, therefore a forever conflict. Just like tigers in the past but opinions changes with time.

As mentioned; it's all human perception. The PRC take great toll to save the giant pandas but eat and kill the rest of the other species to extinction. It's all about human visions rather.

Actually it depends on how cute the animal is which again goes down to human perception.
The giant panda is cute so it gets a lot of attention to protect it. However, the Chinese Giant Salamander which is on the brink of extinction due to loss of habitat and as a delicacy and medicine. Doesn't help that it's ugly and stupid as well >.<"
I mean to get funds to protect an animal, do you want to donate to save something that looks like that?

How many know about the giant salamander as compare to giant panda?
Again it is the perception to the subscribe what is a beauty. Overnight if some rich or famous jokers keep stressing that giant salamanders are beautiful and cute, the hoard will follow. That's what the bicolour panadol become.

That's the thing
It doesn't get any attention because it's ugly
Doesn't help that it drools and stinks as well
Yeah all you need is a celebrity to support it's cause. Guess that applies to the Yangtze river sturgeon and dolphin too
