SINGAPORE: Seventy years ago on December 8, the first World War II bombs fell on Singapore, just before the break of dawn.
Changi Museum held a remembrance ceremony on Thursday to mark that day in 1941.
The laying of a wreath and a minute of silence was observed for the Singaporeans who sacrificed their lives in World War II.
Changi Museum held the ceremony to remind Singaporeans not to take national security for granted, even in times of peace.
But for one former prisoner of war, memory still lingers.
Jimmy Chew, former Prisoner of War, said: "There were about 5,000 prisoners of war in the camp. You know the 'atap' huts, all closed up, no windows. So we took a knife, cut a hole for ventilation. When the Japanese discovered (what we did), they were very mad. So they took all of us in the field, we were made to slap each other, many many times, and we were made to run around the field until we dropped 'dead'."
