SINGAPORE: Public
flats in Singapore may be getting smaller but this has not lowered
quality of living, says Housing and Development Board's (HDB) CEO Cheong
Koon Hean.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a housing
forum on Thursday morning, Dr Cheong noted that there were now fewer
persons living in one flat which works out to increased living space per
person.
"Our families are smaller. In the old days, we have very
large families living in a flat. Today, the family is two, three, four
(people)."
The size of HDB flats has shrunk by five to 10 per cent over the last 20 to 30 years.
For
example, a five-room flat in Bukit Batok Central built in 1989 has a
floor area of 121 square metres, compared to 110 square metres for a
similar unit built in 2003.
Based on official surveys, the average household size was 3.5 in 2010, and 4.9 in 1980.
This
means an occupant in a 110 square metre five-room flat today will have
31 sq metres of space, while a resident in a 121 sq metres five-room
flat in the 80s had only about 25 sq metres of space.
Dr Cheong added that interior design also plays a part in creating good living space.
"In
many global cities of the world or big cities, people do pay attention
to how they do the inside of the flat as well as optimising the use of
furniture and storage. It can be a very comfortable living environment."

But apparently, smaller is more expensive in SG...
The current 4 room flat is even smaller than a old 3rm flat
HBD CEO stay in HDB boh?! mus be Superscale Civil servant either stay in condo, apartment or pte property so shouldn comment and follow MND predecessor who got kick out off his job coz he pissed off a lot of SGreans...
HBD CEO must be like current MND MIC, listen to SGreans and speak compassionately and help SGreans...
What the CEO said is like slapping current MIW govt, while the govt is trying hard to win back Sgreans, this Superscale CS decide that he is big shot enough to speak creative mathematics and compare sqm and standard of living...
PM go for APEC meeting, this Superscale CS decide that he can comment on housing policy and talk big
Tsk, Tsk...
These CEO must be visiting too many showroom HDB flat to make such a stupid comment.
Just like MRT break down due to break-in and rainy day.
We are paying too much moneys to these fat cats that they sprouting nonsense.
Like what forumers said, time to reduce their pay so that more money can be used for the society.
Even a hawker is more generous than them.
And so they can buy a small house and enjoy.
Rather than buy a new property with their pay every year!
Smaller flats doesn't mean lower quality of living: HDB CEO

I am sure many families in Sg do not want to live in a big bungalow with a big garden in the front and at the back of the house.
That would surely erode their quality of living.
lol.. big bungalows and garden makes them complacent, makes them feel entitled, they lose what singapore's forefathers had... discipline, hardwork, compassion and all those good stuff.

Or that lower pay does not equal to lower dignity.
so small.
What the CEO said is true. partially.
Smaller flats does not mean lower standard of living. True.
But paying more for a smaller flat results in a lower standard of living.
If flats become smaller, with a corresponding drop in price, it is alright. I can live with that.
But when I seem to be paying more and more for a flat that is getting smaller and smaller, the value of my money shrinks and I have reduced purchasing power. Unless I've mistaken, reduced purchasing power causes reduced standards of living.

I reject this crap. Smaller flats completely, totally, fully and wholly reduces the quality of living.
Want to sell shit go somewhere else to sell lah. Don't come here and sell your smelly shit.
