I AM dismayed that a row of trees near my HDB flat in Block 402, Hougang Avenue 8, has been removed. These mature Sea Apple trees were all taller than 15m and have been an integral part of my neighbourhood for more than 20 years.
The contractor also told my father that more trees directly facing our unit might be felled.
While there may be legitimate reasons for their removal, there must be proper accountability to the residents, bearing in mind the sentimental, historical and ecological significance of such trees. The town council has underestimated the value of greenery to us.
I have spent many moments of my childhood gazing out of the window of my room at these leafy trees. During the flowering season, one can see sunbirds, bees and even bats flocking to take a sip of nectar from the white flowers. I remember how delighted I was when a bird decided to build a nest on a tree. Many hours of my time were spent observing the parents taking care of their chicks.
From my observations, saplings of Cengal trees have been planted to occupy the now bare green verges. These trees will take many years to reach the same height as the ones that were removed. They also flower and fruit only once in several years, and are therefore not as ecologically appealing to attract biodiversity.
My family and I appeal to the newly formed Aljunied-Hougang Town Council, which manages the trees in my neighbourhood, to clearly state the reasons for felling the trees. More importantly, what are some other ways to save the remaining trees instead of removing them completely?
Notices should be placed on the boards at our void decks prior to such tree-felling work, so residents can be informed and their queries can be answered.

Dear resident,
The trees do not belong to you and you do not have any say on whether it is chopped, trimmed or burned.
Please do not interfere with our constant upgrading project in the area you resided.
If you love green trees, we recommend you to move into a landed property where you can plant any trees that you liked.
Or you can plant more plants along your corridor so that you can admire and tend to them every minute.
Lastly, we would strongly recommend you to join our resident committee activities so that you will not be spending all your leisure hour tree-watching.
Please invest your leisure time in good use through serving the community.
Do the resident committee have tree watching activities?
so many trees broke and fell, killing people, crushing cars... still want more trees?
Tell it to people who's father/mother got killed by falling tree branch or whose car got crushed by falling tree!
many incidents where trees fell by itself and blocked traffic already!

The residents have to be consulted whenever trees are being cut?

Well, it may look silly..the article but it does make a lot of sense on deeper insight. These trees were not grown there overnight. As the writer mentioned, it has been there for over 20 years, where a lot of hougang residents watched it grow up.
I would be angry too if they felled some nice looking and nostalgic trees just like that.

The writer must be taking the last GE too seriously.
Everything also want accountability.
Even cutting down trees at public areas near his home.
if they have not burned the trees maybe they can hand deliver it to the author's house.
The reason is always the government has special eyes, they can see that the trees are diseased, and have to be removed. The public have untrained eyes and cannot spot the rot.
So shut up.
Only you cannot cut a tree without permission, the government can cut any tree they wish.
Next November they will come and plant again. Don't forget every November they have tree planting day.
not enough land for tree planting day next Nov.
The tree has to make way for more immigrants.
