PRIME Minister Lee Hsien Loong's wrap-up speech in Parliament was indeed heartening ('From void deck to Nobel Prize lab'; Oct 21). His warning about an ageing Singapore society is timely.
At 50, I have already prepared myself to explore new grounds and have entered an industry where old age is not a handicap.
From a qualified engineer, I switched to become a taxidermist and obtained training in New Zealand. But when I tried to ply this trade here, I had to surmount many bureaucratic hurdles.
The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) does not seem to be supportive of taxidermy exports from Singapore. Wild animals, birds and fish that died naturally or were killed in road accidents cannot be taxidermied, much less exhibited. Essential chemicals needed for this trade are not allowed to be imported, so substitutes that are less effective have to be used instead.
Despite these obstacles, I was able to compete in the recently concluded New Zealand Taxidermy Association Championship with a pair of mantis shrimp procured from the local supermarket. I won third place.
Every year, a world taxidermy championship attracts taxidermists from many countries. I am sure Singapore can benefit from hosting such an event.
Casinos were deemed unsuitable and eschewed for a long time in Singapore. Yet, we now have two operating here. Should not taxidermy be relooked in a new light with stringent and outdated rules replaced with more pragmatic ones?
Ken Mar
more like death trade.
casinos are okay to the gabrament because of the boost in GDP despite the social costs..
taxidermy doesn't...
that's the difference
The key word is control.
They need to control everything. Everything.
As they have zilch knowledge on taxidermy, the safe answer is no. There, the matter ends.
They rather you attend the Taxi Academy.
they are afraid zombies will roam the streets of singapore

When Mao and Stalin died, their body were preserved and placed for public viewing.
We also need such skilled talents, to prepare for the day when so-and-so dies.
There is only one age proof trade in Sg.
Let's just say... if something can bring in money and benefit and help to offset the high cost of the ministers, then they will consider... things like ERP, COE, Casino... By the way, you must also understand that long time ago already have bookies but Singaporean government smart, they see this evil trade as good money, so they make it illegal for bookies to operate here and they monopolize this industry in Singapore... They can artificially monopolize any industry such as one day they can add a new Car Passenger Tax (if your car wants to have passenger and if you want to drive, you must pay - so lan lan majority have to pay what, how many cars dun want to allow passengers?)
Being government have powers but also come with it responsibilities... but they say they dun owe Singaporeans a living woh... but they make use of their powers to suck Citizens dry woh... They want to have their cake and eat everybody else cake too!
In another 10 to 20 yr times, more people are above 50s +, what can we do?

Increase the cpf retirement age and minimum sum.
It's for their own good.
