TWO categories of people are prone to injuries when using the escalator: the elderly and young children ('Boy's toe trapped in escalator'; Monday).
The use of the escalator is relatively safe if one adheres to safety measures when riding one. Just last week, a friend related an incident when the escalator he was on suddenly jerked. Had he not held on to the handrail, he would have been thrown forward and would have risked injury. It is important, therefore, to use the handrail to prevent accidents.
Rubber footwear is common and many accidents have involved rubber clogs and slippers caught in the escalator. Correctly positioning where we stand can prevent such accidents.
Lastly, hold the child by the hand when riding on the escalator and avoid distraction or other activities until you have completed the ride.

Bennie Cheok may have not read the news in the not-too-distant past when 4 old woman who had faithfully held onto the handrail were thrown backwards from the escalator because the handrail and the escalator did not synchronise in the timing.
So, to hold or not to hold now ???

Madam Hoh Peck Tau, 72, who claimed that one of the mall management officers said the accident happened because the women became giddy
FOUR elderly women suffered deep cuts, fractures and bruises at Punggol Plaza yesterday morning when the handrail of the escalator they were on suddenly stopped moving.
The women, in their 70s and 80s, were just three steps from the top. As they were clutching on to the handrails, they lost their balance and fell backwards.
