Without migration of some magnitude, Singapore's population will decline - even if it manages to boost its Total Fertility Rate (TFR) to 1.85, up from the current 1.15.
This was a key conclusion from a 2007 study conducted by the Institute of Policy Studies, which generated various scenarios of Singapore's population trends.
One of them assumes that Singapore's TFR will rise gradually to 1.85 by 2025 before stabilising at that level, and that there is zero net migration.
Under such circumstances, Singapore's resident population will decline from the current 3.77 million, to 3.37 million by 2050.
Stop the socially-motivated, gender-biased abuse of boy-children, and more will be accepting of the idea of having children.
I can easily empathize with SG natives NOT wanting to have children. The men of society [including in the culture of Singapore] are very abusive of boy-children and irrationally-protective of girl-children. I know that my son will end up being victimized by society and my daughter will be one of the bullies of society who abuses boys. For this reason, I choose NOT to have children.
I want all boy-children to be as safe as possible from society's evil gender stereotypes. However, I have NO hint of care for girl-children. If I had a son, my protective feelings toward him would be overwhelming. I'd want to burn anyone who touched him. On the other hand, if I had a daugher, I'd have no feelings for her and wouldn't care about her at all. Due to these reasons, I don't want children of any gender.
I believe in protecting the underdog and punishing the bully.
Hey warm hearted man passive, I notice your most of your posts are related to children I am not implying anything but... socially-motivated gender-baised abuse and/or bully of children is not the main contributing factor to the declining birth rates.
One of the main factors of declining birthd rate is rising cost of living. The article states that even when we increase our birth rate till 1.85, our population will still decreases. This is because many of the first generation elders would have pass on. The policy of 'stop at two' from the previous generation has lead to increase in birth rate, but however was offset our the current generation declining birth rate due to economic factors.
The rich is getting more and more richer, while the poor is getting more and more poor.
More good years ahead
It is expected. It is so difficult to survive in Singapore. Dont talk about marriage and give birth.
The assumption is likely reflecting the same sentiment of TFR in present and future spore. Seemed foretelling TFR of current FT in the future of spore
Importing population for growth, is that a solution?
Well, importing seems to be the best way out
If I ever have children it will not be here.
too expensive
btw, how come cost of living so high ah?

Is PAP doing anything to curb the rising costs?
i dont mind a smaller population here...
really...
at least it solves the housing and congestion issues...

Everything could just be exaggerated due to PAP's usual extremism when it comes to implementation of policies.
The kiasu, kiasee mentality.
If inside their mind they think Singapore is overpopulated, die they also will crack down on the population. If inside their mind they think Singapore will be underpopulated, die they also will import hundreds of thousands of aliens into Singapore.
This type of PAP fanaticism will cause social problems.
Actually the govt still doesnt know why couples are not giving birth.
The problem is do parents have the time and money to care for their children?
Yes, they can give birth, but they dun have the time to take care of the children, do they abandon them on the streets and let them rot outside while they slog at work?

That means the population level will go back to the 90s figure. Ah, the good old days of smaller crowds and more open spaces.
I feel nostalgic for those days.
hurray again!
what a great slap on the lop sided system of our society!
continue with the rise of singles!
I thought Lee Hsien Loong said that he will limit the importation of aliens into Singapore during May elections?
even with forced and arranged marriage to the foreigns,...such gender policies will only create exponential rise in singles....because of their stupid policies...
Singapore is not exactly the size of Australia. So what if the birth rates drop? Wouldn't this be better? This would mean more land for the less people. Property prices will drop because of more available properties.
This is just PAP excuses to bring in more migrant workers to increase productivity so that it will fuel the economy to pay more taxes to support and pay absorbident salaries of the PAP ministers.

Lee Hsien Loong: We won’t bring in too many foreigners
he said too many right?
that means he will bring in many, just not too many. and how many is many and how many is not too many?

I think there will be many many many.
no quantum, not specify.
how much is less, how much is many?
actually many advanced nations have problems with aging population. if there arent enough births then import is the only solution.
but then the question is how many is enough.

Economy and ecology move in opposite direction.
Sustainability is the key.

I think govt knows what young couples or old couples are facing.
it is just that they might not want to spend too much on babies?
And they might not want to share the responsibility with the couples.
