RAFFLES Place is the heart of Singapore commerce, and yet some of the streets and alleys leading to the Central Business District are strewn with litter.
Each time I walk past Circular Road or neighbouring streets under the shadow of the city's most iconic skyscrapers, I cannot help but wonder why our environment or health inspectors have failed to curb the persistent littering there.
Circular Road has become a nightspot with many pubs spilling over from the Boat Quay area. The littering around these outlets is a blemish on the nation's reputation for cleanliness.
The morning after, office workers and tourists have to walk along five-foot-ways littered with liquor bottles, cans, cigarette butts, tissue paper and leftover food packets.
They often remain that way for much of the working day until the outlets prepare to reopen their doors in the evening.
That this is taking place in Singapore - which prides itself as a clean city - is sad. That it has gone on for so long right in the Central Business District is appalling.

Signs of Singapore liberalising?
Government people (eg. NEA) not doing their work.
I am sure many can see such litters in the heartland, artery road and expressway.
Lai Kwok Kin got help pick up litter or not, or just do nothing and complain

The litters are far and wide. By tonnes.
a case of æ— å®¶æ•™ more than anything...
although can't be said of the foreign workers.. but if they are Singaporeans, it's a matter of bad family values...
the NEA can only clean so much until people start ranting about "wasting taxpayers' money" with hordes of cleaners
let them litter. anyway Sg is no longer "clean".
