Lianhe Wanbao - 1 day 19 hrs 3 mins ago
Yishun residents have been besieged by thousands of birds every evening for the past month.
The birds appear "on time" at about 7pm at blocks 733, 734 and 735 of Yishun Ave 5 daily. Some 20 minutes after they arrive, the birds will quieten down and roost in the trees. They then fly off again next morning en mass.
Their routine is causing a headache for the local residents as it leaves the area carpeted in bird poo and feathers everyday.
Car owners are having to wash their cars daily while residents are forced to keep their windows closed every evening. The smell of bird poo and stray feathers often invade the houses of residents.
When reporters visited the area just before 7pm yesterday, many cars were indeed covered in bird poo.
A resident, Mr Yang (56, fire safety specialist) told reporters that he has to wash his car everyday. He feels helpless but has to do so because the bird poo becomes smelly and hard to wash away if left for too long.
Another resident Mdm Guo (57, housewife) said that it practically "rains" bird poo. When she goes out in the evening, she has to bring an umbrella with her. She also makes sure there is no laundry outside the house when 7pm approaches.
At about 7.20pm, reporters got to witness the surprising phenomenon. Thousands of birds covered the skies above the area of roughly five blocks. Many residents also stopped what they were doing to stare at the massive flock.
This isn't the first time Yishun town played host to flocks of migratory birds. It was reported in 2008 that tens of thousands of swallows appear every year in the area between the months of July and December. This has earned Yishun the nickname of "bird-town". Residents though, are not amused and hope that something can be done.
uh-oh....i sense that the birds will be the losers in all of this.
probably the Asian glossy starling (Aplonis panayensis), a gregarious and noisy little bird.

i thought is the gerbil guy, Richard Gere?
They are not our birds, they belong to the world.
They have passed through here going south, and are now heading back north.
We can't kill them because the Siberian, or the Asian steppe would be short of these returning birds.
How will Singaporeans react?
The wise man saying "It can't be helped." will come in handy at this time.

yar....but i suspect they'll do something to distract or shoo away the birds somewhere else and possibly deprive them of a suitable rest-spot.
or maybe they can put up a sign that says, "Plz go to Mandai can or not"!
Actually it is an annual problem. And could be managed. But you got an idea there.
The type trees they like to roost on could be planted in Mandai Forest or else where. And town planers should avoid using those trees for landscaping.
last time i stay AMK oso got this prob
but is every evening between 6pm to 7pm
at the open carpark
got ppl come and play CD (err, i think is cassette tape tt era) of some other noises supposed to scare them away
and oso got 鸣枪 like NDP like tt
but oni useful for a while
cos they still come back later
until they botak the trees.............................................
yar...it's up to the planners to think about issues like this.
In the meanwhile, i can understand why the people who live there are not happy....bird poo everyday on the new 520i is not preferred.
Cassette tape era that means the 70-80's, that means the 6pm to 7pm is the now 7pm + , because around that era the time was advanced by 1/2 hour twice.
That means the same birds?
the open c/p is now an mscp
no more birds, no more luck

they say if a bird shits on you, you're lucky...
i wonder how lucky it is if you're covered in birdcrap
that being said, if they're migratory, let them be.. after a while, they'll all go away
