PEOPLE'S Association (PA) community clubs (CCs) have become a popular hang-out for residents in a community.
The community-oriented activities, modern facilities and diverse range of enrichment programmes available to the public at low cost are especially appealing to many HDB residents of modest means and lifestyle.
The activities and programmes are attractive as they are designed to keep participants physically fit and mentally challenged, and they promote community bonding.
So the PA must be conscious of the kind of businesses it allows on its CC premises.
Fast food and seafood restaurants that are associated with unhealthy eating and expensive taste, as well as karaoke lounges that sell liquor to young adults and elderly patrons do not gel with the image of the CCs.
Perhaps a modern cafeteria that serves a variety of local hawker food is more relevant.
The CCs could also allocate a room on their premises to screen video clips and have pictorial displays of the history of Singapore for the young and new citizens to know their country better.
Jolly Wee
not a very jolly fellow.
