WE REFER to Mr Dennis Puar's letter ('Mahjong 'bust''; July 23). All forms of gambling in Singapore are illegal except for bets placed with Singapore Pools, Singapore Turf Club, in jackpot rooms in licensed social clubhouses and at the two casinos - namely Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands.
It is an offence under the Common Gaming Houses Act for any person or establishment to operate gambling activities (including mahjong) for the purpose of making a profit, or for any person to gamble inside a common gaming house.
However, it is not the intent of the law to deny people a social game of mahjong.
Therefore, playing mahjong among a small group of friends and relatives is generally allowed. The police have since contacted Mr Puar to address the concerns raised in his letter.
