SINGAPORE: Mohd Riduan Abd Salam, who stole 13 letters containing credit cards when he was working with Singapore Post, was sentenced Friday to six months' jail.
The 22-year-old Malaysian, who is no longer with Singapore Post, took the mail from the credit card shelf in the sorting room of SingPost's Woodlands Delivery Base.
The former postman then used the cards to make 18 transactions totalling more than S$6,600 in May.
Mohd Riduan pleaded guilty to five of 13 charges.
The court heard that he hid the letters in his shirt pocket before heading home to Johor Bahru.
Most of the time, Mohd Riduan used the cards to purchase petrol in Malaysia.
He also used them to buy a home theatre system and car accessories.
However, his illegal actions came to light when the owners of the credit cards found out that they had been billed for transactions they did not make.
They informed the police who arrested Mohd Riduan.
Last month, another former postal officer was jailed 33 months for a similar offence.
Twenty-four-year-old Andy Soh Wei Keong, who used to work in the mail processing department at the Singapore Post Centre, stole 11 envelopes containing credit cards.
Soh, who worked with an accomplice, then used them to buy 10 luxury timepieces valued at more than S$104,000 in all.
