SINGAPORE: Given the
current sentiment among the electorate, Singaporeans might prefer a
President who is not so closely linked to the People's Action Party
(PAP), retired minister Lim Boon Heng said on Sunday when asked about
former PAP MP Tan Cheng Bock's bid to run for the Elected Presidency.
The
former Minister in the Prime Minister's Office said he read the news of
Dr Tan's intention with "very, very mixed feelings".
Both Mr
Lim and Dr Tan were first elected to Parliament in the 1980 General
Election (GE). They were parliamentary colleagues for 26 years before Dr
Tan stepped down from politics prior to the 2006 GE. Mr Lim retired
from the political scene before the recent GE.
Speaking at the
sidelines of a People's Association event, Mr Lim said: "My sense is
that people would prefer if there were someone who can be a strong
unifying symbol for Singaporeans, who's not so closely related to the
PAP."
While there could be exceptions, he added: "I don't know
whether Dr Tan Cheng Bock, in spite of his independent streak of
thinking and expression of views, fully meets the bill."
Mr Lim
said he hopes that other capable Singaporeans will come forward so that
the country could pick the "best person for the current climate that we
have".
Singaporeans would like to support Lim Boon Heng as our next President
I prefer no president.
Times are bad.
a president without the vested powers of the people is just as good as a puppet..

A elected candidate without the support of the MIWs will not survive the nomination also.

What about Chiam See Tong for the post ?

$4m shared by Singaporeans over 365 days is not a big sum to pay if we want a good, kind and experiences President like Mr. Nathan.
Imagine we can be bullied if we do not have a strong and respected President to lead us in bilateral relationships.

U shutthe fuck up yourself first!
Did u note read that he personally escorted the hijackers out in 1972? Despite the danger, he did it for the sake and safety of Signapore!
Is this not enough? Moreover he kept a tight fist on the reserves. Also his reputation and international track record make our neighbours respect Signapore even more.
In view of this, I think Lim Boon Heng and George Yeo are good candidates.
We Singaporeans are so lucky to be spoilt for choices for Presidency!

Our president is a figurehead.
lets focus on change...
the powers and duties of the president-elect must be thoroughly reviewed along similar lines as the review of ministerial pay....
as an elect, dun u think the president's role should be put to consensus of the citizens, rather than dictated?
This will further point to a review of the constitutional law per se ...that will be the real change...
i would suggest starting a review of the president-elect's role, powers and duties FIRST...and only it is balanced with the consensus of the citizens, and enacted into the constitution prior to conducting the presidential election...
dun be fooled or rushed into choosing a president without powers vested by the people
I support Tin Pei Ling for president. The post is powerless, she cannot do any damage there.
