Dressed in singlets, board shorts and flip-flops, Mr Jay Liu, 22, and
his three friends did not look out of place at Holland Village hawker
centre yesterday afternoon.
The four, who are from the heartland areas of Yishun, Sembawang and Tampines, had turned up deliberately in those togs.
They were there to support '1,000 peeps to Holland V in
Singlets, Shorts and Slippers Day', the event started on social
networking site Facebook in response to an on-air rant by someone named
'Samantha'.
On March 23, Samantha had phoned in to local radio station
91.3FM, berating 'uncultured' heartlanders dressed in shorts and
slippers and saying they should stay away from Holland Village. She has
since apologised on-air for her remarks.
Referring to the Twitter hashtag So Singaporean, Mr Liu, a
civil servant, said: 'This is us being So Singaporean. There's nothing
wrong with us dressing like this.'
Meanwhile, shopkeepers yesterday told The Sunday Times it was largely just another normal Saturday at Holland Village.
