DEPRIVING a disabled person of a reserved parking space, as the driver of a BMW did, is inconsiderate and reflects a lack of empathy ('Driver hogs car space for disabled'; Sunday). What also riled me was his recalcitrance by committing the offence seven times. He continued despite HDB issuing him as many tickets and fines, which he trashed in a cavalier manner.
I suggest the following for such recalcitrant behaviour: hefty fines starting with $500 for the first offence and $1,000 for each subsequent offence. In addition, impose six demerit points for the second and subsequent offences. Offenders who commit more than three offences consecutively should have their cars impounded. The car should be released only after the driver pays a $10,000 fine, failing which, it should be sent to the scrapyard.
Hopefully these measures should make any motorist think twice before callously robbing legitimate users of a disabled driver's parking space.
