WHEN I visited Pulau Ubin recently, I was appalled at the state of the toilets in Noordin Beach. There was no water supply and the toilets were choked with excrement.
It was embarrassing to witness visitors come out of the toilets in disgust and to have to tell them that the next toilet facility was far away.
Looking at the condition of the toilet and the aged condition of the "no water" signage, I deduced that the broken water pump issue had been neglected for a while.
Similarly, as I went on to Changi Beach to camp, I was surprised that the indoor showers had been removed and we had to use the outdoor shower facilities, which had a feeble metal mesh around them.
The new arrangement compromises privacy as one can clearly see males and females undressing to shower. It did not help that my female companions had to deal with undesirable leering by people who lingered around the pathway to enjoy the view of the shower area.
I wish the authorities would promptly fix the public toilets and re-install shower facilities inside the toilets to ensure basic modesty.
