STAFF at the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) headquarters in Kim Seng Road can expect designer chairs at their workplace soon.
The ministry is buying 472 Herman Miller chairs (photo), each priced at $575, for general office use for its staff. The chairs, which are not delivered yet, will cost $271,400 in total.
Herman Miller, an American manufacturer of office furniture and equipment, is famous for producing furniture in the modernist style.
An MOM spokesman confirmed in a statement yesterday that it has awarded a tender for the supply and delivery of the ergonomically designed chairs.
The chair model is called Celle, known for its cellular suspension system which supports the back and lumbar region. The tender was awarded to local furniture supplier Xtra Office.
In evaluating the tenders submitted, the MOM spokesman said, various factors were considered, such as the ergonomic design, durability and value for money. 'Taking all these factors into account, the successful tenderer met our requirements and offered the best value for money over the lifespan of the chairs.'

$575 for a chair.
using taxpayers money?
好命啊 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't even afford to buy one for my home use.......
shd call these farkers to task.
they can even do that sort of stunt so near election?
Singaporeans must be daft.
Yes, MOM staff not human... they shld use plastic kopitam chairs...
But at least my office chair cost almost twice of it
wont the other ministries be asking why they didnt get the same chair as well?
or do they plan to buy it for every single civil servant?
Pls lah all of you do u think that Govt never used their caculators!!!!.....perharps you should know a few pointers.....
1) some of the SG ministries used herman miller furnitures since the early 80s.....so it is not just today.
Those furnitures used for at least 20 ought years. Herman miller furnitures come with long Warranty....particularly some chairs come with 12 years warranty. paying 500 bucks for 12 years warranty is really not bad a deal. Considering they expect people to work beyond 40 hours work week...heeee....!!!!
To add.....
It probably cost effective to reduce maintenance cost on government facilities. frequent replacement of cheap chair from China isn't going to reduce maintenance cost.....ever look at how tall are the govt buildings these days.
Originally posted by BJK:These are wastage of public funds where the auditor-general should look into. A chair worth $100 plus is good enough. Also it is not the chair, it is the user that must be educated to sit in an upright position.
its about depreciation over a longer period of time.....Your 100 dollar chair doesn't make the cut.

what you are saying has no logic.
if buying such chairs are so cost effective then our govt or in fact all businesses should have done it a long time ago.
and btw wont the chairs look 'old' after a few years?

look old? still useable ah...?
if really got long warrenty like wat Arapahoe said then not bad wor...
Afterall, it adds to staff morale and provide staff welfare... I'm sure u wouldn't wan to work in a company that provides plastic kopitiam chairs eh...?
Personally, getting welfare for staff is better then buying a gold plated one for just the ministar no?
But still, the best staff welfare would be to cut ministar pay and divide downwards to the ministry workers... afterall, they are doing most the job instead of just shaking hands and appear on TV

the long years of warranty give you free parts replacement.....I ever walked in MAS building in 2005 they were using Herman miller furniture that dated back in the 70s.
Do your maths....

The idea is because it's the ministry which is upgrading...
U think ppl care if some private company like "XXXXX Logistic Company" or "YYYY Insurance company" change to $2k chairs??

Go asked those companies that does business with SG ministries. Asked them Govt money easy to make or not....?
when you see people on the streets picking up carboards and pushing trolleys........you wonder if these people belong to a different planet.
The criteria to receive help is so stringent yet the budget for these extravagant chairs are approved.....in the blink of an eye?
