SENIOR Minister Goh Chok Tong attributes our present water self-sufficiency to political will, sheer determination and creativity ('Clean water a result of a wave of effort'; Monday).
It is now time to focus on garnering new energy resources.
In the same way that our neighbours cannot be depended upon to sell us water in perpetuity, neither can we assume that, in the future, Singapore will not be deprived of oil and gas. Our search and development of alternative sources of energy must start now and should have no less the intensity and ingenuity we levied on water.
After the recent Japanese disaster, nuclear power is clearly not the answer. The world has about 400 nuclear power stations and already we have had a few major incidents.
The chances of having a disaster if Singapore operated a nuclear power generator for 100 years are high, a consequence we, on our postage stamp-size country, just cannot live with.
Even with research on solar power in its infancy, with vast improvements in costs and efficiencies certain in the future, a back-of-the-envelope calculation shows that, should all HDB blocks be installed with solar panels on the roof, 20 per cent of our present energy needs can be met. The potential seems unlimited.
The science behind solar panels involves semiconductor technology, which Singapore already excels in. It is well within our ability to research and manufacture these panels. The market for them already exceeds $30 billion, and getting a slice of this action will open up a whole new sector of manufacturing for Singapore.
Solar energy is clean and green, dependent on an ample resource, free of encumbrances imposed by neighbours and is difficult to sabotage.
There is far more for Singapore to gain by embracing solar power over nuclear energy.
Dr Yik Keng Yeong
Inefficient, expensive and does not provide a constant source of electricity... By hitting only 20 percent, there is no extra to be store in battries, meaning electicty output will go up and down on cloudy, rainy days when the sun is being blocked...
If one were to argue that solar power holds unlimited potential, then the same could be said for the other types of power... Statement that solar holds unlimited potential isn't wrong, but it simply shows that the article is bias... Does Dr Yik believes there isn't potential for other technologies???

Near parliament.
Scared the hell out of the timid PAP MPs.
to quote Dr Yik Keng Keong own words...
One never says never when the more medical knowledge one discovers, the more astounded one feels about how impossibilities evolve into probabilities and subsequently into literally dead certainties.
The same could be said for the other technologies...
Unless more studies and research have proven, this would just like taking a gamble...

Build it acid's house.
Boom.
Acid mutation.

on top of the parliament... safest place.. since nobodys living there... no health risks...

Nice contribution. Singapore has all the sun, we should consider solar energy.. just build the solar receiving devices on top of every HDB flat.
oh, I forgot to add in...
It wont be funny when ur electricity bill is more then 10 times off wat u're paying now due to maintance of solar power...
Then maybe its time we attack Libya.
If you were to cover all 3 exposed sides of an MRT cabin to take solar power, then to power just the air conditioning for 1 cabin of the train, the train needs to be 1km long.
Well come to think of it, since quite sometime back, ppl have been suggesting alot of ideas...
Take a look at Japan's idea last year (I did a post here somewhere)...
They wanted to built an orbital Space Satellite to collect solar power (reminds u of Gundam OO eh...?) and beam it down to japan via microwave... Naturally the idea was put off since the neighbouring countries are protestig to it to various reason... If something goes wrong, the microwave beam might slice japan or taiwan... Or in other cases, it might fire wrongly at the wrong place and thus becoming something like "an ion cannon"
Those from middle east (forget which country) surprisingly also suggesting something orbital... Building Orbital nuclear power plants... Now, imagine wat would happen if nuclear power plants explode in space and is pulled into our stratosphere...? GG~~!!!
Built something that uses water or sun to generate electricity.
If Spore can make it (newater), I am sure we can do it.
Nuclear plant too risky, not worth the try.

acid.....i dun think he meant that solar power.the solar power is those mirror types that are able to melt a metal block when solar sunlight is directed at it.please see james may documentary on robots, future transport and future power supply.
It is possible to collect the heat from the sun, fill it up in the form of energy in a big container...regenerate it and becomes elecrticity. Spore sit on tropical island where afternoon heat source is the best.
store it up..current method would be a bomb.yes...a bomb!something that kills.
what u need is to store em all up which has to be invented like energon cubes in transformeer movie.
so far only thing to store energy now would be batteries...or perhaps molten metal which stores up energy thats needed to melt them using solar as seen in most recent solar farms which in turn could be generated to steam n eventually mechanical energy.
It's time for our first class gahment to review our energy policy.
Debate before GE different parties energy policy.
cool !!!
our small spore not enough space for solar panels de. land expensive. one feet sq of solar panels can produce how much electricity? u see other countries how much space is use for solar and wind energy. they even build in the sea like holland.
go back to less electricity society bah.

ie smaller population.
That's y i want live debate before GE.
Different parties can give different policies on energy, cost of living, income inequality, social welfare,Foreign talent, immigration, national security, terrorism, national service and housing policies.
Live debate is very important.
It let the voters have a choice.

There's no reason not to hold live debate.
I wanna see PM Lee can debate well mah.
I also wanna see what policies opp parties have.
