'Why not pick up litter that other people have left behind?'
MR LOREN HOWERTER: 'I have lived in Japan, and I agree with Ms Charlotte Chu ('Clean and green: Why Japan beats top-ranking S'pore'; Feb 22). Singapore has strict laws against littering, but we should go farther. Why not pick up litter that other people have left behind? At a bus stop recently, a woman was sitting on a bench which had some litter next to her. I asked if it was hers, and she said no. A rubbish bin was about 5m away, so I cleared the litter. The woman looked at me as if I was crazy. Sometimes, when I pick up litter, people thank me, but usually not. Let us teach kids to actively take responsibility to keep Singapore clean, which is most efficiently accomplished by parents setting a good example.'
If we pick up the litter then the fallen talent for sweeping floor need to fly back home.
MR Loren Howerter...
I'm deeply touched by ur speech and ur action...
My company is interested to hire you as a road sweeper where you can further ur passions...
How/what does the average Singaporean gain by disposing of someone else's litter?

Why Japan beat Singapore? This Mr Howerter talk cock lah,he must go to ulu areas in Japan where you can find tons of garbage discreetly littered in the forest.Of course there are people who go around picking rubbish.....we all have some kind of OCD issue also hidden within us.There are more cleaners walking around in Japan to make sure the country remains clean because Japanese people couldnt careless when refuse bins are hard to locate unlike SIngapore..Also, go to a Japanese home in the suburban and rural area and see to believe.
It really depends on what types of litter you are willing to pick up and throw in the dustbin.
If someone throw a cigraette butt, I would not want to pick it up for the smokers.
If it is a paper, then it is ok.

You shouldnt even be picking anything, let the pros do it.However you shouldnt be littering and that is the point.Have to program the mind into not littering instead of picking up things that doesnt belong there.

the man lives in japan ...... listen to him.
Maybe the fine for littering should up.
Make it a heavy fine to stop the littering.
eg. 1st offender : $1k fine.
2nd offender : $5k fine
3rd offender : $10k fine + 1 month jail.

Any educated Japanese knows the phrase, 'Clean and Green' and it rightfully belong to one small country in Asia.Japan only looks cleaner because they hire many cleaners to walk around with white gloves and these people really do a good job.If you wake up early in the morning to walk around you maybe could compare the place you are at to Mustafa in Serangoon road on a Sunday night>LOL

I think this is too harsh......more like someone just molested the Garbage Bin or something.Community work is better,I believe i read something like that years ago where people had to be humiliated for being a litter bug.

Ha.....seem to be.
But it will really deter the litter bugs.
How to humilate a littler bugs? Asking them to sweep is not really a good solution.
We need to paste their face on the notice board.

In Singapore, 2 in 5 are non-Singaporeans. These people may not have the moral duty to maintain the image of Singapore, let alone clearing up others mess. There is only so much we can do in educating, fines and providing convenience (trash-bin everywhere). It is about the love and a Heart for the Country.
