A OLL conducted on www.straitstimes.com saw majority of Singaporeans in support of tipping.
They also believed that the practice of tipping will improve service standards and boost productivity.
Rubbish survey result by the State Times again.
wats the service tax for?
Because they dun wan to pay 10% service charge. Tipping in use, use credit card, save all the trouble. Save 10% riao.
I don't like to tip others because that seems to be a decadence pratice by the rich and anyway I can't afford tips, I don't know how much to give, too little people laugh. I just avoid places where tipping is the practice.
I don't belong to those places, definitely.
I also prefer no tip, and the automatic 10% charge stay.
Tipping is just not so........civilized.
I thought it is actually a benefit that there is no culture of tipping.
By the way, be careful, once tipping is widely practiced in the restaurant industry, it can spread in society and then become expected in other sectors too.
Such as,
Taxi ride. Must tip the driver.
Hotel.
etc etc.
But my main discomfort about tipping is......hard to say.....but it seems rather feudal.....it is a feudal action.......it is more civilized if the 2 people interacting do not openly hand over the money to one another but done in the background.
hmmmm.....or under table $
rubbish lah.....................service charge also go to the company not the employee..............
S'poreans prefer to tip ????
they prefer not to pay at all.......................makan free................take for free...........
Service tax is rather useless. Whether the service itself is good or not, people still pay it. Why should this be the practice?
While the best way is to motivate all waiter(esse)s to work hard regardless of tips, we all know that this is impossible. Money is the best way to motivate someone. Hence, tipping is a way to attain better service. Afterall, if the service is good, tip. If service isn't good, don't tip. (I've given a 1 cent tip before to show my displeasure at a restaurant.)
And as to how much we should tip, a simple way is to take the current service tax as a guildline. A voluntary 10%, +/- % whatever depending on your experience.
As for paying with credit cards, the US has long implemented a system where the service amount is written at the bottom of the receipt before signing.
Tipping is not uncivilized. It's a different way/culture. Sure, it might not be our current culture.... but...

GST is must pay one, that goes to government. Tipping would replace service charge.
tts why this poll
we shd do away with the forced service charge (which most of the time we dont relli get good service) and use tipping instead
