THE Land Transport Authority (LTA) generally allots a longer time for the signal allowing pedestrians to cross the road at crossings where there are more vulnerable pedestrians, such as the elderly and physically challenged (''Green man' too quick for the old and grey' by Mr M. Lukshumayeh; Forum Online, Feb12).
We have also implemented the Green Man Plus scheme since October 2009 at five pilot locations near health facilities and transport nodes. This scheme allows the elderly up to five seconds more green man time when activated.
Seniors can activate this function simply by tapping their senior citizen concession pass on the card readers. We are currently studying the expansion of this scheme to other locations.
At very busy major road junctions, the timings of our traffic lights must strike a balance between traffic efficiency and consideration for pedestrians.
This means that the timings allocated have to be effective in ensuring that vehicular traffic flow is not too severely impeded by the extra time we give to pedestrians to cross safely.
We thank Mr Lukshumayeh for his letter.

if an elderly doesn't have a senior concession card?
then the elderly get run over
can don't cross the road.
So they use (and will use) millions and millions of tax payer dollars to set up this "tapping" system when all they needed to do was increase 5 seconds on ALL the current traffic lights.
Which scholar came up with this idea?
besides crossing the roads, i think many senior citizens do have difficulty getting taxi to hospital visits or bring them home when they r alone outside....
card or no card, cant drivers simply give the old people more time to cross?
but one time i see this old man, he damn good lat, traffic is moving he cross the road, heck care, all cars stop for him
haha
sekali one day these unker tap, LTA secretly deduct 20cents......

It is a good idea esp when spore are facing old age problem very soon.
It would be better to educate the old in terms of tv ad such as installing a number blinking green signals and bimping sound will help them.
Also motorised should learn to be be more tolerence when waiting for old pple to cross.

hahaha....what to do?
I myself also walk in a snail pace while crossing the road.
That is why I prefer to hv display digitals ticking so that I will either walk on or wait for the next green man.
