THE Government has asked Singaporeans to make foreigners welcome in Singapore, whether they are new citizens, permanent residents, employment pass holders or work permit holders. Similarly, these foreigners are told they must try to integrate with the local citizens and participate in their activities.
The State can facilitate this process. MediaCorp has an expatriate radio station - 96.3X FM - that broadcasts French, Japanese, German, Hindi and Korean programmes. This station caters only to the expat communities in Singapore.
MediaCorp should consider operating another radio station broadcasting in Tagalog, Bengali and Burmese. After all, we do have a sizeable number of workers from the Philippines, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Besides offering news, music and programmes from their respective home countries, the station could broadcast programmes on safety, health and hygiene issues, as well as on their rights, obligations and duties while in Singapore. In this way, we show that we care not only for high-earning expats but also the immigrant workers in our midst. It will also make the Ministry of Manpower's job easier in reaching out to these workers.
I am sure many advertisers would also welcome this service as it will enable them to reach their target audiences more effectively.

the author is actually comparing the foreign workers to the expatriates.
if we can't even get a proper station which plays rock music, what makes them think they can get a station which plays stuff like that?
can't they go youtube?

from where one ah ???
This would only bring a step backwards towards integration. When they do not listen to radio in local languages.
It has been years since I tuned in to the radio.
the FTs doesn't want to integrate.
i think the world is slowly slowly starting to realise that the foreigners they take in, most of them do not want to integrate.. it'll take a few generations to do so and the process will be hampered by their parents who dragged the children from their worse-off places in the first place...
however, this view, this fact, is condemned by the bleeding hearts because it is "politically incorrect"

Integration is easier in the early days. When you come to a strange place with a total different lingua, the only choice is to speak the local ligua. Also transportation is less developed, it took a week for instance to travel between China and Singapore.
But now with all the various communication from internet to mobiles and ease of transport, integration is not a priority for any immigrants.
in the past people come here for good.
now people come here and move on once they find a better place.
