New S'porean Jet Li: You don't need my charity here

Gongfu star Jet Li now carries a pink IC too. However, the 47-year-old actor, who is also known for his humanitarian efforts, says his priority is not Singapore.
Jet Li, famed for his roles in various Hollywood and Hong Kong movies, publicly confirmed his Singapore citizenship on Tuesday (Jan 25). He was previously living in the United States for 20 years.
He set up the One Foundation in 2007, raising more than US$25 million since its establishment. The celebrity is also the goodwill ambassador of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
At a philanthrophy conference yesterday (Jan 25), Jet Li announced that although he had wanted to do many things in Singapore, he feels needs are not as urgent here as in other countries.
Speaking at the conference, Li said: "Many things in Singapore are very mature. There are already many (charitable) organisations here."
"Perhaps in the future, many places across the globe may need my services. Such needs may be more urgent than those in Singapore," he added.
STOMPers are divided over Jet Li's decision.

"Who says our country doesn't have needs? Look at our ageing population, look at our rising cost of living, look at the needy families who cannot even send their children to school.
"We all should do our part to help our country -- I do! I volunteer whenever I can, so I feel he could at least spend a bit of time here to help.
"However, to be fair, I do agree we are better off than other countries. At least we have clean running water, access to education and facilities, as well as many charitable organisations.
"Another point I would like to make: With so many other Singapore citizens here (some born here, some also newly-made), do all of us lend a helping hand to those in need? Perhaps we should look at ourselves first before we criticise others."
STOMPer Jetsetting shares his thoughts:
"It's his money, so it's entirely up to him to decide who he wants to help.
"I can totally understand where he is coming from -- we are a nation which has enough resources to help itself.
"We don't have natural disasters wrecking havoc, we don't have extreme forest fires or chaos in our country.
"It's perfectly fair that Jet Li decides to help countries which need his charity more -- much, much more.
"In the first place, he is not obligated to choose the path of philanthrophy after becoming a celebrity. He can very well spend all of his money on himself, but he doesn't.
"So, don't be a hater. He is not 'expected' to do anything, so cut him some slack."

well, you know. he like the low personal income tax rate, and the security of the country, and how clean and green it is. and his kids can be bilingual without any special effort on his part. so it is very attractive. so what if he can only carry SG passport (but for all you know he still got multiple citizenship). after all, SG passport very good one. and now he so old, cant make him do NS right?

He's here for the citizenship, to enable him for easy visits to the US, something which was a hassle if he were a PRC citizen.
That's how valuable (or not) our passport is. I don't feel proud if freaking tom cruise, gong li or jet li becomes a citizen of singapore because it simply reminds me of our lax immigration policy over the past decade.

i'm no idiot; of course i know singapore doesnt allow dual citizenship. what im saying is, he ALREADY is a US citizen, so he doesnt need to get SIngapore citizenship just to gain easy access to US. -
