WHILE it is gratifying to read that the Housing Board is reviewing the rule governing co-sharing of flats by siblings ('HDB to review rule on siblings'; Jan 18), the HDB should also lower the age for flat ownership by single citizens by a decade to 25 years of age.
As Singaporeans adopt a more urbanised Western attitude, it would make sense to accommodate their obvious desire to live on their own.
Such a move should not be seen as a lack of filial concern for their parents. My two children do not live with me, yet we have healthy relationships.
Staying out enables young people to grow up and be more independent. It prepares them to be better partners and parents in the future.
Many parents in our Asian culture still mother their adult children and make decisions for them. Many even impose curfew hours for their single adult children when the latter are well into their early 30s.
We can encourage these young single people to get married by providing generous incentives when they upgrade their flats to get married.
Young adult citizens at an early stage of their careers form a large proportion of the group of Singaporeans who face the middle-income squeeze and they would certainly welcome assistance, given the stiff property prices.

Why 25 ?
Why not 21? Like every other PR applicant?
Even if they cannot afford it when they are 21, at least the option is still open to them.
citizens good, prs better.

Single permanent residents are not allowed to buy an HDB flat, period.
Not even when they are 35, and not even under the joint singles scheme or joint siblings scheme, or the orphans scheme. These schemes are all for Singapore Citizens only.
Only Single Singapore Citizens who are over the age of 35 can buy and own a resale flat by themselves .....
these facts are easily accessible, where did you get yours from ?

Single PRs are allowed to buy resale HDB flats together with their single siblings as long as they are 21 and above.
That's why there has been this recent hoo ha about single PR privileges vs single citizen privileges.

They can't buy by themselves cos only single citizens over 35 can do so.

the joint singles scheme requires all parties to be singapore citizens.
http://www.hdb.gov.sg/fi10/fi10321p.nsf/w/BuyResaleFlatJointSingleScheme?OpenDocument
the singles orphans scheme requires the main applicant to be a Singapore Citizen too.

The rest are all schemes for family units, and two single siblings does not constitute a family unit according to the rules.
If you were talking about that letter to the forums, perhaps you should have read the follow up clarification from the HDB.
I believe you all are mistaken about my post.
My post is in reference to the age of applying.
Since single PRs can apply for a hdb resale flat at age 21 with their siblings, why not set the age for this scheme as proposed by this doctor to 21 for single Singaporean citizens.
It has got nothing to do with single PRs applying for new hdb flats, which I believe you all mistaken think I am refering to.

I know about all these.
See my above post.
I was refering to the age.
Since we are on this topic.

By the way, you do know that a single PR can apply for a resale hdb flat with her sibling as long as both are 21 years old and above right ? (parents will have to be living overseas)
But a single Singaporean cannot apply for a resale hdb until she turns 35 years old. (As indicated by all the policy rules you just dug up from the hdb website)

The issue of affordability is not the point here.
But rather the age.

Well the option to purchase is up to them, who really cares if they can afford as long as they pay up. Not all 35 year olds can afford to buy a flat either, so being 21, 25, 30, 33, doesn't really make a damn difference.

Did you read the link ?? .... the only instance when single PRs can apply for an HDB flat, is when they are latched onto the application of a Single Singapore Citizen applying under the orphans scheme. Under the orphans scheme, single singapore citizen siblings over the age of 21 can (infact, it's designed for ) own an HDB flat too.
And, we are all talking about resale flats here, since new HDB flats, are reserved for Singapore Citizens and their family units only.
Two siblings are not eligible under the public scheme, as, I've pointed out, they don't constitute a family unit according to the rules. whether citizens or otherwise.
PRs definitely didn't get preferential treatment over citizens. Infact, if anyone actually bothers to scroll through the HDB eligibility documents, he'll notice that almost all of these schemes, and ALL of the subsidies, are reserved for Singapore Citizens only.
If let them have HDB at 25, even more people will choose to be single....

yes I think it does ..... if it becomes 21 or 25, we'll see a lot more single ah xias types snapping up units with their family money and holding onto them for rental income. At 21 most guys have just ORD'ed, who else, but those ah xias working for their parents, can afford this kind of money ? .....
Infact, i think there should be means testing for those over 35 singles too.

so....... $inkaporeans lugi again........???
Back to the topic, I reckon its a very stupid idea to let singles in singapore own a flat at that age of 25. Young couples getting married are having hell lot of trouble getting homes of their own, and then they have to contend with competing against young singles. That is really one way to bring a population reluctant to settle down, even more so to remain single.
The writer is prolly someone in his late 30s who balloted more than 7 times and couldn't get a damn flat. Like me.

Singaporeans have always been on the losing end, MPs will just tell you, you wanna win, you gotta be better than them.

Fatum, I suggest you do a simple google search with key words like "PR siblings scheme resale flats" and have a look at the online chatter for the past few months regarding this issue.
There are just too many to link and direct you to.
The HDB prices will go up if that happens! Not again?

dun go and gong gong waste another $10 to ballot again .....
go and highlight to the HDB, they always have left over, unselected units available for the really sway, multiple ballot failures types.
That is, assuming you've not rejected any flats before.
I dun think it'll happen lah....25 is pretty young to own a HDB flat....
Interesting, they removed the single PR siblings scheme from the hdb website totally.
But all the details can be found via online forums and blogs.
