Why new immigrant wants MM Lee's home preserved
THE house which has been home to Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and his family for more than half a century now is more than just a building ('MM's house: 'When I'm dead, demolish it''; last Friday).
Like myself, I am certain Singaporeans regard the home as a symbol of our national identity. An older generation who lived through the tumultuous days of independence and immediately after may also have a more sentimental attachment to it.
As an immigrant from India, I have been inspired to stay on here by the ideals which form the building blocks of this nation. It is gratifying to know and feel the framework of accountability, honesty and meritocracy that supports prosperity in Singapore.
Emotionally and culturally, I feel more at home here and that is why I turned down the opportunity to migrate to the United States.
As MM Lee has noted, Singapore is a nation in the making and it needs a light to guide it to full nationhood. If preserving his home means preserving the ideology, the inspiration and the vision, why shouldn't it remain, rather than be demolished?
