WE THANK Mr Seow Joo Heng for his feedback ("More hygienic way of clearing plates needed"; Jan 6).
Trolleys are still the most efficient way for cleaners to remove large amounts of leftover food and soiled crockery. However, we agree that cleaning methods can be improved. To promote higher standards of cleaning among cleaners, the National Environment Agency encourages cleaning contractors to send their cleaners for training under the Environmental Cleaning Workforce Skills Qualifications.
We encourage operators of food establishments to engage only cleaning companies which have been accredited under our Voluntary Accreditation Scheme. Launched in July last year, the scheme recognises companies that deliver higher standards of cleaning through proper training of workers, usage of proper equipment and best practices.
However, everyone has a part to play to upkeep good hygiene standards and patrons, too, can play a part to keep tables clean by clearing their own utensils.
