'Is there a move to change 'Chinese New Year' to 'Spring Festival'?'
MR PHUA KOK HENG: 'Is there a move by government agencies and some commercial groups to rename the traditional 'Chinese New Year' celebration to 'Spring Festival'? China used to be the only country to call the celebration Spring Festival. Other South-east Asian countries and Western cities with sizeable Chinese populations such as San Francisco, New York, London, Sydney and Vancouver all call it Chinese New Year. The real motive for the name change is unclear and perhaps the relevant authorities like the Singapore Tourism Board could explain.'

Anyways Singapore does not have spring.
Singapore is not a four season country.
It is hot and humid all year round. Typical tropical climate.
No spring.
But maybe it is good to call it spring festival once in a while, to soothe people's yearning for four seasons.

Chinese New Year have been a dull event for years, locals will go abroad for holidays, and families are growing smaller, so the garbrament can call it what they wants, they just like to suck up to the China. The garbrament have no backbone anyway.
Chinese New Year isn't all that important anymore, some locals might not even feel it if the holidays are taken away.
China people working here will also go back to celebrate so even sucking up to the China people also garbra, why don't the garbrament call it ,"Suck Up To The China People Day." if they are so horny and desperate.

this reminds me of the recent changes that have surfaced in sg chinese media regarding chinese names of countries/places.
we have always called:
Australia as 澳洲 for convenience instead of 澳大利亚
New Zealand as 纽西兰 instead of 新西兰
Indonesia as �尼 for convenience instead of �度尼西亚
Brisbane as 布里斯本 Instead of 布里斯ç�
all the latter names above are used by PRC most of the times fyi. I don't think there is a need to re-align the chinese names to those used by PRC since we have been used to the old names and there is no confusion whatsoever. i seriously wonder if MDA or whatever relevant agency did issue any statement to the media to adopt the PRC translated names. utterly disgusted. -

Since there are also many India new citizens here, most probably Thaipusam and Deepavali will be renamed to some other name that they like.

Singapore has no four season unlike China. It will be very odd to name it Spring Festival. To us, whole year round is either considered Spring or Summer.

No move to replace the term 'Chinese New Year'
SINCE 2004, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has been promoting the various Chinese New Year events under the marketing banner of 'Spring Festival' or 'Chun Jie' ('Is there a move to change 'Chinese New Year' to 'Spring Festival'?' by Mr Phua Kok Heng; Jan 15).
There is no move to replace the term 'Chinese New Year' as we continue to use this phrase freely in our promotional materials.
We wish Mr Phua a happy year of the golden Rabbit.
