HAWKER fare at restaurant prices, from $13 nasi padang to $17 laksa, is becoming more common in food courts here, and it is raising the ire of diners.
These hefty prices, previously seen only at food courts in town, are also creeping into the heartland.
But stall owners say they have little choice but to charge such prices due to high rents and food costs.
At three newly opened food courts - Rasapura Masters in Marina Bay Sands (MBS), and heartland mall Nex's Food Republic and Food Junction- there are stalls selling meals priced above $10.
A meal of nasi padang with three side dishes - meat, seafood and vegetable - at the 960-seat Rasapura Masters can cost as much as $13.30.
In contrast, Indonesian restaurant Tambuah Mas at Marina Square offers a $9 rice set with four sides - an egg, one meat and two vegetable items.
i guess more people are going eat macdonals for lunch cos its cheap, 4.5, with drinks
we are fast becoming like US or Australia
Well, it really cannot be helped if they are charged high rental, there is only one place they can channel the costs of covering overheads, to its customers.
That amount can go eat a decent western food in other coffeeshops....or McDonald's, KFC, B King, LJohnS....cheaper.
this sort of nonsense is slowly happening in other heartland malls too.
for example, nowadays 1 rice and 2 veg dish at food court can cost $3 and above.
and to think that food court are "supposed" to be the most economical choice of food within a shopping center.
Little wonder that these chap chai png stalls are seeing less and less customers.
with this money i can have a nice meal at pizza hut
I feel like migrating even more

pizza hut where got so cheap?
this is all the more a bigger reason to have lesser or no more food courts!
let's have more hawker centres instead!
Imagine, paying $10 and above for a measly meal......might as well shop for the ingredients and cook at home
some might even grow it at home
the end of good hawker fares at affordable prices...
U know the foodcourt stalls in AMK are asking for S$20K to S$30K in monthly rentals leh... no choice must up the food price mah....but still affordable there....I dunno the rentals are how much for NEX or MBS...
it won't be surprising if 1 plate of nasi lemak costs $1 million SGD in future
check prices properly, ask the stallholders first, before buying and paying.
on the other hands, restorans are offering a lot of below 10 bucks set meals, sometimes nett even
it's our choice

Meals above $10 are becoming common at suburban spots; owners blame higher costs

Obviously Huang Lijie doesn't know the difference between hawker and foodcourt.
It's either you pay those prices or your $4 char siew rice will only have 2 slices of char siew.
eat reaturant better lah! if price is same.
Why would anyone pay over $6 for hawker or food court meal?
wa so exp?
i rather eat $5 mac value ...
I still go for my $3.50 economy rice lei
erm , haha think is what,, restuarant is high class, hawker centre is no air con, shouldnt charge such an exorbintat price leh..heeee
and nowadays to be very honest, banquet/food junction seems to be more reasonably priced..
kopitiam group average pricings are categorized on area/zones? [like 1 standard for coffeeshops [non-aircon], 1 standard for heartland malls/shopping malls [prices still vary] and the most ex would be cbd outlets that have aircon]
it's inevitable....when singapore is already a globalised city and with setups like casinos and resorts etc, how much do you expect one bowl of laksa to be?
The PAP has been telling all this to us subtly over the years. This is a trend that will never relent. Rental is the key factor that kills many businesses. And salaries still stay depressed......so it's pretty much a double whammy. Just imagine, a fresh poly grad for example, a decade ago earned $1500, today it's still the same. Ten years later?
And by that time, a plate of chicken rice costs $5?
A fresh uni grad earned $2000 a decade ago, today it's $3000. But HDB prices have gone up a few folds? Ten years later? The overseas filipino, indian or chinaman can replace you for half that salary.
if not all the stalls are selling at such prices then its ok.
ever wonder why they are still selling at that price? because there are customers willing to pay that amount!!!
just boycott. in no time they will either close or reduce price. otherwise it will only mean its not so ex to that neighbourhood afterall.
