A WOMAN was jailed for six weeks on Thursday for selling and having a component part of an M16 rifle.
Loh Boon Cheng, 55, had admitted to selling an M16 rifle firing pin to an intern with The New Paper without a licence on March 5, and possessing it on March 18.
The prosecution told the court that the intern bought the firing pin - which is essential in firing the weapon - for $70 from Loh's shop on the second floor of Beach Road Food Centre. The intern's colleague lodged a police report.
During a raid 13 days later, police officers found a firing pin from a container in the shop.
The prosecutor had sought an eight-week jail sentence to send a strong message that dealing in or having possession of controlled parts, must be viewed seriously. He told District Judge Low Wee Ping that Loh's husband had been jailed three weeks in 2006 for fraudulent possession of M16 rifle magazines and blank attachments while Loh was let off with a warning.
Loh could have been fined up to $10,000 and jailed for up to three years for dealing in the item. For possession, she could have been fined up to $5,000 and jailed for up to three years.
