SINGAPORE: Prime
Minister Lee Hsien Loong has called for leadership renewal within the
Malay Muslim community.
Speaking at the annual community leaders'
forum on Sunday, Mr Lee said leadership renewal is vital at all levels,
including the labour movement and politics.
Leadership renewal
cannot happen overnight but must be planned systematically, he added.
Mr
Lee noted that young people are keen to get involved. Malay Muslim
organisations should find ways to tap this "resource", he said.
Young
people, Mr Lee said, can tackle problems and challenges with fresh
enthusiasm and imagination.
Mr Lee said that new issues will call
for creative responses.
To set the wheels in motion, this year's
forum has for the first time involved the participation of young Malay
Muslim Singaporeans.
A youth-centric report was released,
charting a 10-year forward-planning exercise for the community.
The
aim is to get young Malay Muslims here to take ownership of issues
facing their community and to identify future leaders.
