Student pleads guilty to child pornography charges

SINGAPORE: A student, believed to be Singaporean, has pleaded guilty to 17 charges of making a child pornography video between July 15, 2008 and March 19, 2010.
Yorkshire newspaper, The Press, reported on Tuesday that all the charges related to the files found on the computer of University of York student, Jonathan Wong, 23.
He could be jailed when he is sentenced on Dec 13.
The Press reported that Wong, who lives on the Heslington campus, had built up his secret hoard of lengthy and "graphic" movies featuring girls as young as six over more than a year.
The case came to light after fellow students became suspicious about audio files on the university's internal network, and alerted campus authorities, who traced the files to Wong.
Police were then informed and uncovered pornographic images of children on his computer, York magistrates heard yesterday.
Officers raided Wong's home and took away his laptop and computer hard drive.
When police computer experts examined the hard drive, they found 50 videos, all of which featured child pornography.
Of the films, 25 were rated as four on the Copine scale, which is used to decide the severity of child pornography.
The top two categories, levels four and five, are used for hardcore pornography.
Magistrates decided their maximum sentencing power of 12 months in prison was insufficient, and committed him instead to York Crown Court where he will be sentenced next month.
A University of York spokesman declined to comment until after the December court date.

Jonathan Wong was formerly from The Chinese High School and Hwa Chong Junior College and had reportedly been caned in front of the school population in TCHS, though the offence for which he was punished publicly remains unknown.
The child pornographic videos were found on the university’s intranet, and it is a possibility that Jonathan Wong may have been distributing or circulating these videos amongst some students in the University of York.

This is the problem when Singaporeans are given new found Freedom, they can't handle the excitement and got themselves onto serious crime.
Many of my friend's children, gone overseas to study and get into problems like gambling, fights, drugs and sex parties. Parents protect their children in Singapore from everything (just like our government) without exposing them to such "Vice" so when they get their new found Freedom they go all out to have FUN.
Stop shielding our children from vice but teach them what is right and wrong. They need to grow up and be responsible for their actions.

I was from his secondary school but went to a different JC (didn't do well enough to go HCJC). I was not close to him.
My personal impression of him was that he is very direct, loud, honest and, to some extent, overbearing. His results were constantly good and he was talented in the humanities.
From what I know, he enjoys the humanities subjects very much- both learning and teaching. He was someone who could have contributed a lot to society. And no, in case you are thinking, I don't think he took on teaching to get close to children or anything like that.
I would argue that he does not deserve the monster tags that everyone has thrown at him. Perhaps a regular person who has an extremely weird and dangerous fetish that got totally out of hand. I feel sorry for his parents, close friends and his ex-teachers (some of whom taught me too). At this stage, any pity for him is moot.
