THE next time you walk along the stretch of the Singapore River in
front of the Asian Civilisations Museum, you could come face to face
with Deng Xiaoping.
A bust of the late Chinese leader was unveiled on Sunday
during Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping's visit to Singapore to mark 20
years of bilateral ties between the two countries.
The monument, which consists of a sculpture of Deng and a
plaque detailing his life and achievements, is the fourth in the
National Heritage Board's (NHB) 'Friends to our Shores' series.
The series is a collaboration between NHB and embassies here
to honour eminent personalities from abroad with links to Singapore.
The other three personalities honoured are Joseph Conrad,
the Polish-born British writer who died in 1924, Ho Chi Minh, the father
of modern Vietnam who died in 1969, and Philippine national hero Jose
Rizal, who died in 1896.
The four monuments are all within walking distance of one
another. Conrad's bust is outside Maybank Tower along the river while
those of Ho and Rizal are on the green across the river.
