SINGAPORE: Home
Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam said the police had picked up 40
suspected gangsters in an islandwide blitz.
He stressed that the
authorities would continue with the sweep over the next few weeks.
Mr
Shanmugam also said the Bukit Panjang incident was not racially
motivated.
The minister added that the kind of gangs now is
different from the ones in the 50s and 60s.
They are more of a
street gang nature and not as structured as the older traditional gangs.
He
acknowledged the public's concern and gave the assurance that the
police would deal with the matter effectively and intervene early.
Mr
Shanmugam said the trend has been stable due to effective policing.
He
was speaking at the CID briefing on the gang situation in Singapore.
He
assured the public that the authorities take a firm stance on gang
violence.
